He keeps trying to swim up the outake of my FX5. He's tried it several times, but this morning he got just over half his body in there. He's also 12-13" long, so that kind of worried me. he started thrashing really hard like he was caught, before it spit him out. Is there any way I can mod the out put of the filter to keep him out?

It depends on how much you like the flow from the filter. I would think you could cover it with some screening/mesh, or make a jet nozzle for it, or just add a spray bar. I'm sure someone on the list knows what pipe sizes could be specifically used for modding it.
