  • White, murky film on top of the water

This has never happened to my 55g before. But suddenly, after my tank was re-scaped, and a majority of the fish were sold, there's this kind of murky white fil on top of the water. It breaks up when I feed or put something through it. So I thought to agitate the the surface bit that just pushed it around.
College = fishless for now. Vicarious living!

Have you fed the fish something different lately? Sometimes feed with a higher fat content will leave such a film. I especially notice this with my turtle and bichir/climbing perch aquaria.

Hmm... nope. Not at all. I've been feeding the same thing. I might be over feeding, though... I did get rid of a lot of stock recently.

to me sounds like this is due to you stirring up the tank. make as much surface aggitation as possible and filter your water as much as you can (if you have any extra filters lying around throw 'em on there) and do a couple extra water changes and it should clear up over time.

I've had this problem before. Like Cichlid1409 said, it's probably from stirring stuff up, or it could be something that wasn't rinsed off from your new deco.

Anyways, HFBers have suggested to me to:

          1. Buy a surface skimmer (Eheim makes one, I believe).

          2. Try setting dry paper towels on top of the water and then gently but immediately removing them.

          3. Try using a fine-meshed net to scoop up the scum on top.

Hope one of those tricks works for ya!

This method definitely works... I've had to use it before.

What are the facts? Again and again and again--what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your only clue.
