Hello guys I'm gettin a 140 gallon tank. I want to get a few centerpiece fish like 2 frontosa, but if they cost to much I would just get a few juvie frontosa. I was thinking about putting my angelfish in them. However the angelfish are doing fine with the discus. Can you guys tell me how much a juvinile frontosa goes for? I have bought some frontosa before but they were burundi and rather plain looking not a lot of blue. I saw a video on youtube and saw the moba. Are they the blueist of all the frontosa? I know a lot of people recommended Ron C, but I just want to make sure Im making the right choice. THe last cichlid setup which was in my 58 gallon didnt end well. They start eating each other until the last one got trab between the rocks and died to.

Re: frontosa
I am no expect on this subject matter but Angelfish and Frontosa's are most likely not going to be good tank mates, and its not because they are aggressive to each other, its that each fish does not like the others environment. Angel thrive best with tall greenery around, roots, etc and a well lit aquarium. They would also appreciate the 50% water change from Houston water with some RO or rainwater.
Frontosa's on the other hand are Lake Tanganyika fish and live at depths where plantation does not occur much. To not have stressed Frontosa's you really need a rocky hillside aquarium with sandy bottom an environment that the Angels would be stressed in. The water in Lake Tanganyika is also Houston Tap Water hard and pH. You will not want to change the water in their tanks out with RO or Rainwater.
Your Angels would be much happier staying with the Discus who have their same or near same requirements on tank setup.
Like I said before I am not an expert on the subject, but from what I can read they just would not like each others environment and I would hate to see your fish stressed.

Oh I'm not keeping the angels with the frontosa lol. That would be murder for the frontosa. I was wanting to put just frontosa in my new tank.180 gallon RR wild discus, harlequins, congos, rainbow, pleco, cardinals, rummynose, rcs, and amanos. Â 2260 eheim pressurize co2 4x54 tek lights

Re: frontosa
Ahh okie :) that is cool... now you are making me envious. I watched Ron's Frontosa fry and I how now seen several tanks with them and I am like, one of these days I am buying a 180g tank JUST so I can get a Lake Tanganyika tank setup and have some Frontosa... They are just beautiful fish. I saw a tank of Frontosa over at H0nkzz and absolutely love how bright white to black contract they can have. I have seen Black Frontosa's too, but personally I was more impressed with the ones that had the strong white to black striping.

Re: frontosa
The ones I have seen called black Frontosa's are basically the same as the normal ones except for the fact the black stripes are so wide they only leave a thin strip of what looks like very deep blue line between each other making the fish look almost completely black with just few blue lines through them.

That is an ad for Black Frontosa. That is the darkest I have ever seen a Frontosa most of the black one have more blue to them.

Re: frontosa
The black just happens....there is no variant that is known for being super black. RonR has a moba momma that is super black and puts out superb fry that are unreal!!!
As for the frontosa thing, they are best kept in a colony since that is their natural setting so I would got with a group at least.

Re: frontosa
if I have a 140g, i would get a group of REALLY nice Frontosa fry (maybe 7-9) from breeder like Ron or whoever else that breed outstanding Zaires or even Tanzanians for that matter. Set up a strictly Tanganyikan Tank until the frontosas get big enough to make an adult / possibly breeding colony. You might want to go with Tanzanians if price is an issue. they are really nice, and go relatively cheaper than zaires. i picked up a few F1 Mpimbwe from a guy in the woodlands last year for like $9 each but never get a hold of him again.
i just don't think 2 frontosa make a really nice centre piece in a fairly big tank like 140g but thats just me.My name is Andri, and I'm an Ikoholic ! Back in the game !

Re: frontosa
Depends on how much you want to pay.... I have seen 1-2" go for as low as $10 ea., but the only thing was the guy didn't know exactly what type they were. If you go to somewhere like Fish Ranch or Fish Gallery, I think their smallest ones go for around $20+ each. If you are looking for a nice colony for that tank, SCOTT has a group of 7 I think that he is asking $200 for the group. They are pretty nice, saw them over the weekend.

Re: frontosa
my mpimbwe cost me $9 each from a guy in woodlands. they're about 1.5" when i picked up.
I'd try not to buy Frontosa from LFS unless They're WC, just because you can't be sure what type they are (it's hard to tell when they're young) and It's a little pricey compare to buying from breeders.
Heres a link that might help you with the Frontosa varients
My suggestion is pick the kind you like and HUNT for them !

Re: frontosa
Zaire Frontosa are not really frontosa at all. They are actually Cyphotilapia Gibberosa, a different species. Most people relate to the name Frontosa so we generally do not inform them otherwise.
As for price, different varients will cost different amounts depending on what varient, what generation, size, and the seller. I have 2 wild caught colonies of Gibberosas, Moba and Mpimbwe. RonR has a breeding colony of moba that if your lucky you might be able to purchase some good quality fry from him. Otherwise if you want zaire you will have to be diligent with your search, and probably end up shipping.
hOnkzz gave you a good link. Cyphos.com is a great forum for info on all Cyphotilapia species (Frontosa, Gibberosa), with great members who are willing to help (I'm a veteran member there). You can also find many members who are selling fry from time to time at excellent prices.
Good luck with your search!
Jeff
