I've read a bit and apparently they just need to be washed really well. I scrubbed the crap out of them and soaked them in chlorinated tap water, baked them to dry them thoroughly and sanitize them, and washed them again.75 planted (Being Renovated)

I have used them since my early days of fish keeping.....just rinse them with hot water real good and your good to go.....some folks, myself included, use the smaller lava rocks inside their canister filters.

Ive been using a type of black lava rock in my tank for years. Have never had any trouble at all. I do find that the unique texture of the rocks makes them easy to stack and make some really cool caves.5 gal baby hecqui grow out

try landscape yards...call around and ask them.....I came from SoCal...back in the eighties...I used to just drive up to the high desert (about 60 miles) and pick up all kinds of nice pieces of lava rock and other nice pieces of decor....manzanita brush is native there too....smiles.
