    i bought a 75 gallons aquarium at my LFS, and after filling it up with 2 inches of gravels, i started filling it with water up to 1 inches from the top. i kept tab of how many gallons i putted in the aquarium, and it came out to be 28.5 gallons.i highly doubt my gravels took up 45 gallons of water... i went back and complaint and they said that they never said it was 75 gallons, there was a piece of paper in there that said 75 gallons which i tossed out when i got home cause it was just a 8.5x11 that anyone can write on. beware guys, make sure you measure the aquarium first

    turn out my 20 gallons really only hold 17.5 gallons, my 10 gallons, my 10 gallons only hold 8.7 gallons, and my 5 gallons only hold 3.5 gallons... i've been keeping aquarium for almost a decade, how did i never notice?

      A standard 75 gallon aquarium measures about 48"x18"x21" tall.

        There should be a considerable difference between a 30 gallon tank and a 75 gallon tank . I just don't understand how you could have made the mistake . Just like Al stated above....a standard 75 gallon tank measures 48"x18"x21" .

          I agree, just to be sure for yourself, use this formula to calculate a tanks volume before purchasing it.

          Length x width x height = divided by 231 = total volume.

              so

              48x18x21 = 18144 divided by 231 = 78.54 gallons.

                  I'm really bad at math...where did 231 come from?

                        Measurement thing?

                        Speaking of measurements...some guy told me to never buy a hexagon tank, alway get a rectangular tank. He was gone before I could ask him why. Is this a cubic inch issue or a surface area thing?

                            I think that comes down to personal preference, and what kind of fish you are keeping. I wouldn't put aggressive fish in a hex because there would be less room for them to create their own territories, but that's just me.
