  • Your thoughts please

I set up a 135 gal tank.  When I did I put a 1/4 inch rubber mat under the tank to help even out any unnecessary pressure.  Well the mat has squished out of the back of the tank about 3mm and there is now about a 3mm overhang in the front of the tank.  Do you think this could cause any long term issues?  Any thoughts are appreciated.  Thanks

I don't see how it could, but maybe I'm not quite understanding the situation fully...what kind of problems have you imagined?
I'm assuming the sides that have squished out have done so because of displacement...?

I was more concerned about the front side where there is an overhang and not much support under it.

I am curious as to where you got your 1/4 rubbermat.  I was at hope depot and ended up getting some sort of shower floor rubber mat to put my tank on, and it isn't very thick.  They had good rubber mat for underneath carpetting but they wanted to sell you a roll big enough to put rubber mat in an entire room.

I got it from a friend.  I will ask him and send you a PM.

I agree with Mzungu, I don't see how this overhang of rubber would affect the tank or have any long term issues of any kind. It may not be very attractive, but I can't see where it would affect the stability or overall structure of the tank/stand in any way.

Nice idea by the way, of adding some cushion for the weight on the glass, a bit overkill perhaps, but still, nice idea.

Sorry - I think I am not making the issue clear.  I have a way of doing that.  The rubber was the same size as the tank.  After it settled it sticks out in the back, but the tank overhangs in the front about 3mm.  There is nothing under the first 3mm or so of the tank in the front.  I have been monitoring it to see if it moves any more.  Keep your fingers crossed.

OOOOHH, okay, I get it now!
Hmm...Some say that having an unlevel tank will cause problems in the future...but if the tank is only hanging 3mm off, then the majority of the rim is still sitting on the mat, correct?

                  Re: Your thoughts please

That is correct - The majority of the rim is on the mat and the tank is a glass cages.  From what I remember it has some cross beams under it.  I put a level to the top of the tank and it seems pretty close to true.  Thanks for your input.

                    Glass or Acrylic ?

If Acrylic, there is a possibility of worry (3mm is very little) ... if glass, then there should be no problem.   Glass does not give, if it does then there is a WHOLE other problem you are about to face and then the mat or anything else under the tank wouldn't have matters

Zulaab - it is glass.   Thought I may be worrying to much, but I sure dont want to see all that water out of the tank.

I can understand your concerns, but...since 3mm is only about 1/8th of an inch......you should be fine. This means approximately 99% of your tank is supported. There should be very little pressure (only 1% of the gross weight), if any on this leading edge.

Now keep in mind, I do not build rocket ships for a living....but it's just my thinking on this matter.

                          Re: Your thoughts please

I have used 1/2" thick white styrofoam scraps between my tanks and the stand - price is right and it works well (it squishes where the weight is higest sort of self leveling)

Most stands are not so sturdy that the middle doesn't sagg.  Therefore the most important support is the two ends.

I concur, the small gap in the front shouldn's be any problem.
