    Re: Black Ghost Knife

You can have a BGK in a planted tank but since they are nocturnal you may not see much of him due to your bright lights.  After he gets used to your tank you may see him more.  I have an African Brown Knife and I didn't see him for months.  Now he'll come out a swim around and it's a beautiful sight!  At first you may have to feed him live/frozen bloodworms, mosquito larva, brine shrimp, etc.  I have gotten mine to eat cichlid pellets.  I basically fed him frozen/live daily for a few weeks and then backed off to every other day once I started seeing him more comfortable in the tank.  BGK easily hit 14 inches so make sure you have a large enough tank.  I've seen others house them with angels.  Make sure your tetras won't fit into his mouth or you might start having fish disappear.

Don't know about cichlids...they might be a little too aggressive for the Ghost Knife, depending on what kind you're talking about. The knife's wavy anal fin might be a bit too tempting.

Thats true Mzungu...we have african cichlids but also a Dempsy and Convict.....that might be too much trouble.

I just really like the BGK, i think they are a really unique fish that I would love to watch...too bad I cant but it in my hex tank

I'd only put them with peaceful cichlids.  Even if it was fine with the more aggressive cichlids when they were all small you may run into trouble once the cichlids are full grown.  It sounds like you'd have to plan a tank around a BGK.  A good reason for another tank?  I think so!

I've kept a bgk with angels before without any issues.  Be sure to build him a nice little cave hiding place.  True, you won't see him much, but at least you'll know he's there.

                        Re: Black Ghost Knife

Angels will also eat bloodworms and tetras will try.  You can feed you bgk flake but he will need the worms for maximum growth and health.  Sometimes wgvdiscus will buy a large amout of bloodworms and resell them to individuals at a very fair price.

bgk can be trained to eat frozen bloodworms from you hand and it can be a quite impressive site.

If you buy the worms in the solid flat sheets they are not that expensive.  If you buy them in the packages with the little pop out portions they can get expensive.  Depending on where you shop they may or may not have the solid flat 16oz packages, you may want to look around.  If you are going to keep your bgk with your angels and tetras I would feed the worms at least twice a week, preferably three times.  If you hang around here you will find a lot of us buy our foods on line as compared to our LFS.  I buy my flake in larger quantities online and usually hit Walter up for worms   .
