  • PH 8.2 out of Tap what is the best fish

OK my water out the tap is 8.2 I am starting a new 55 gallon tank. I have a ehim 2217 filter and a sand bottom. It has now been running a week I did take some dirty water out my 15 gallon to get some things to start growing. What is best and can I do community tank with a PH this high and not fight.

    Help is greatly apprciated.

I have this same issue. My ph is at the same level. You basically can keep Malawis and tangs and they would think they were at home in the lake.

Other fishes kept in lower ph areas, such as SA, can be kept and breed. However, I always aim for a more biotope setting so I stick with tangs.
I ate my fish that died.

African cichlids. Tanganyikans or Malawi. With a tank that size I would think along the lines of Cyprichromis, Shellies, Brichardi, or Lelupi.
      120g - Tropheus Moorii Kambwimba
      180g - Petrochromis Macrognathus Dine/Tropheus Moorii Namansi I

I agree with the other comments. Malawi cichlids and Tanganyikan cichlid would love that water . . . but most of the fish that you see in LFS in Houston have already been acclimated to the same tap water that you are using. Many fish can thrive in pH 8.2

Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

Houston water you gotta love it !!! I second what the guys had been telling you most africans gonna love that condition, but armthehomeless got a good point if its in the lfs is most probably that the fish has been introduced already. In my past experiences is the ph going up and down that causes trouble I have keep Discus in Houston Tap water and they have survived and look nice but if you start using chemicals and things to keep it down and then somehow they go up, that's more likely to kill the fish for me a stable ph is healtier. Hope it helps gl.

OK i have one question being new to the site and terms .... what is the term LFS I am sorry not the sharpest one here .....

I love Discus, I use to have 4 of them back in my New Orleans days with Rainbows in my 90 gallon tank.

other question I DO NOT WANT TO BUY FROM BIG HOUSES ( PETCO, PETSMART ) I live in Spring, have been to ultimate fish on 2920 and Aquairum World on 290 where are the other locally owned to buy from

              LFS - Local Fish Store

The other places to go to: Fish Ranch II, Fish Gallery, City Pets, etc... These are in SW Houston. That's all I can think of because those are the ones I go to most of the time.

I stopped in Ultimate Fish and FishRUS yesterday. Seems like these places aren't what they once were. Could be the economy or me growing way to picky.

There are several on line sources that have quality stock. You can also post a wish list here and get good responses most of the time.

While Fish Gallery is a little expensive I've never received a bad fish from them. To me they are the #1 LFS in Houston.
