How do you know when your fish are stressed??

And if they show signs, how do you treat??

Why do you think they are stressed?

Try to figure out what is causing the problem. Have you done anything to the tank recently?

      Re: Stress

I dont think they are stressed....I just set up a new tank....and need more bacteria so I added an established media and some tetras...

I just bought 6 angels and everyone told me to keep a look out and make sure they are not stressed...

Just wondering how to tell they are stressed if they are...

        Re: Stress

Gasping/lethargic/laying on the bottom/ darting everywhere.

I would remove the tetras for now since you added the angels for about a week or so....just so you don't shock the tank too much if it has any beneficial bacteria that is.

I would refrain from feeding for at least a day or two.

              Re: Stress

Are you testing the water for ammonia and nitrites and nitrates?

Ammonia is very bad, any ammonia at all. If you find any ammonia on testing, you need to do something. Either a partial water change or if your water conditioner handles ammonia (like Prime does) you can add that.

Nitrites are bad, less bad but still bad. If you are finding that on testing, you can try adding a bit of salt to help fish deal with it. Or do a partial water change. Or add Prime, it works for that also.

If you are not testing for ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates, then do small frequent water changes. Be sure to treat the new water for chlorine before adding. If you do not know if your water has chlorine or chloramines, then use a water conditioner like Prime that treats both AND detoxes the ammonia. Some say they treat chloramine but don't say they treat the ammonia that releases.

If you are not sure if the fish are stressed, and you can't test and don't want to do a water change you can add a dose of Prime to the tank as often as every other day I think. If ammonia or nitrites are a problem, the fish will feel better instantly. (I do this whenever we have a power failure, add Prime first, deal with the power second.)
