Fish Ranch is not far from Fish Gallery and City Pets is not much further from that and Global is inbetween Fish Ranch and City pets.

One right of 59 (forgot the name) right past the beltway next to Dairy Queen

On Bellfort? I think it was called Discount Tropical Fish. Last time I drove by it, it was gone. But the last time I sent to that FS, there were dead fish in almost every tank and the person who was working there got upset because I did not want to buy anything! He blamed "people like you <me>"  for the dead fish! I left without saying anything and spread the news about the lousy store and service.
Also terrible was that pet store that used to be on Elgin. I forgot the cross street, but it was close to where Elgin becomes Westhimer in the Montrose area. That place was also bad about numerous dead fish in their tanks.

Glad we have nicer stores these days.

City Pets on BW8 and Beechnut - Large selections and they just redid, expanded their fish area last month.
Xtreme Fish and Pets on Bellaire near Boone - Nice large selection, but they have dyed fish, but again their stuff is nice and cheap.
Fish Land - Westhiemer and Synott - ok selection - also cheap
Fish-N-Pets - Bisonnett and Synott - not been there but I heard at was an expensive place.
T&T Fish and reptile - again good selection and cheap.
Fish Ranch II at 59 and Sharpstown Mall - I liked their selection - didnt have much time therefore didnt look at prices.

I dont go to Petco or Petsmart they usually dont have a good selection of cichlids or great deals. They are kind of like Walmart I go there if I want to pick up something that I need and the fish stores are close since they all have stupid hours for people who work a 8-5. But I went to FR thursday and they have a good selection and good prices but it still is a little far for me during the weekdays.

Darbex, I'm moving downtown in a few weeks. On the other side of 59 north of Minute Maid.

But, the other stores are not far from FG. I'm not sure what type of fish you are into but let me run this down for you.

Global is off Bellaire....John is a good guy and his wife is sexy!
Fish Ranch ...Have some ok fish but you may find a trade in that is cheap
TNT is ok and have some nice tangs
Fishland is clean...freshwater selection is cool
The one off 59 past the beltway is cool also

Now what I like about these shop is that you deal with the owner and can bargin on anything. When I was heavy into saltwater Fishland use to sell me Show Angels for cheap. And I picked up a Sohal tang that was about 11 inches for 75 dollars.

The one on Bellaire and Synott was the best. WhenI was running my 240 Fowlr.. I pick up a huge niger trigger for 45 dollars and two more Sohal for 100 each one was about 8 inches and had wonderful color.

Now, in saying all of this....even though you drive a little farther...you deal with the owners. And trust me cash always talk to them. And they have greater buying power then FG.

When I get settle we will go one weekend. bring cash....because credit cards are a no no LOL

Yeah Discount Tropical Fish. Man that guy change. When I was going there he was cool as a breeze. Hell, I got my frist Front from there. A huge male that came from Richard who was breeding fronts in Houston. I also brought my first tank from him. A 125 all glass.

Nick...you are old dude. You talking about the wildlife store right on Elgin. Man they use to sell monkeys and all type of stuff.

                              Nick...you are old dude.

                              ??? 37 is old?

I also remember Tropical fish World on S. Post Oak, Aquarama (one on Hillcroft and one on S. Loop Frwy near Telephone), and Aquamart, back when they were on Hillcroft only 1 block from Aquarama! Those were nice stores.

I have been in the hobby since I was a child. As a teen, I was already making purchases from mail order pet supply catalogs, way before they days of the internet. In fact my first purchase was the System 3 undergravel filter which can be used reverse flow or traditional style. I still use it in my 55 gallon aquarium.
I don't think they have been available for many years now.
