Rams I bought at Fish Ranch arent as hardy as the ones I have bought at Fish Gallery...for what its worth

Most rams are from the orients and they breed for profit so most of the rams are almost out the door when they get to the LFS.

With the soft water thing.....I had no problems breeding both rams and apistos in houston water with ADA Aquasoil substrate which softened and lowered the pH to good levels for them and it also kept it pretty consistent too.

That along with heavily planted and pressurized co2.

Ek,   As usual you are great help to think of other things than what I am just thinking of :)  I have forgotten how nice the Apistogramma does look like.  I might just go that route.  Now you are not going to see me build this tank for a few more months.  Right now I need to get out of the summer so I have some money -  I will most likely also change jobs this fall as I have gotten to a point where they are not going to increase my pay where I work at and I am bored stiff because I am not doing anything interesting and I am not learning something new.
So once the money starts flowing again it will not take long before I start getting the hobby back up to full speed again.
