  • PICS! My Parents' 55g

Hey all! Did a complete overhaul of my parents' tank since I've been visiting them in Cali for the weekend. They had only 4 fish (a male guppy, 2 platies, and a molly), all of which were born in the tank at some point in time. It also houses a piece of driftwood that is about 15 years old (and has been submerged that entire time), and the tank sits on a stand that I've had since I was 9 (over 20 years ago!). They had also had 2 clown loaches (which are now sold-- see "loach violence" thread ), and a red sailfin pleco that I bought as a baby about 4-5 years ago. Turns out they hadn't opened the canister in about a year, which was REALLY fun for me. And the entire tank was covered in diatoms and other smut. So I tweaked the filtration a bit, did some water changing and some scrubbing, and added plants and more fish. It now houses the gentle giant sailfin pleco, 3 otos, 3 baby panda corys, 8 priscilla tetras, various platies, various mollies, and the male guppy from before. The pleco has been hilarious-- it even let one of the little pandas sit on one of his pectoral fins for a while today. LOL! Hope you enjoy the pics! It's definitely an easily maintained community aquarium now.

Thanks again! I know my dad absolutely LOVES those otos, and his favorite is the platy with the black tail, orange body, and yellow face. My mom wants the following: "a blue fish that is not small that is not aggressive and that is not difficult to care for." Ha! But I think she secretly likes watching the priscilla tetras.

You should definitely share pics of the tanks you set up for your family!

Thanks for the suggestion Tater. Will show mom pics of those when I go back in November and maybe pick up one or two.

ScorpiosWife-- sure was a lot of work, but so fun!! I have no qualms about spending my days off on fish tanks. :P
