  • Tired of searching....need help, advice, ID!

Howdy yall! Scorpio and I picked up some fish last night from another boxer, along with a 10g for my snails (which came today), a 40g and 6 fish which came with them. I've spent the bulk of the day preparing both tanks & with no internet. Off to the LFS I went to pick up some new supplies and see if I could find any info on the new babies. No luck. I've got internet back and am finding mixed reviews.

Decided I would come here to see what experiences yall have had & get some sound advice rather than see what ehow or yahoo has to say. These guys need a bigger tank, that's for sure. There are way too many fish in the 40g & we'd like to put some of them into our 75g (if possible) with our 2 oscars (3-4"), pleco (4-5") & our dragonfish (5-6"), which will eventually be moved to a 150+g. They're all little guys right now and I just don't want to get any of them hurt or killed.

The fish that we came home with are 2 pink gouramis (3"), 2 parrot fish (4") *how do you tell a true parrot from a blood red parrot?* & 2 loaches (6-7" with amazing jumping skills & very distinct black and white stripes. *ID?*) Which reminds me that I need a top for both of the new tanks *sigh*.

Which of these can we possibly move into the 75g with our oscars? Pending attitude adjustments, of course. Our tiger oscar is SO docile, and our albino oscar is too, once it gets to know you. (We're sure she's a woman, lol.) I've read about pink gouramis kissing the faces off of other fish, loaches going nutballs, oscars killing everything, etc. Then again, I've read about all of them living together peacefully. We need some input from experienced people!

    50g - Various platy & mollies
    10g - 1 Green Spotted Puffer

Eep. Okay so the oscars are pretty small right now but I'd keep the gouramis outta there. Maybe the parrot fish and the oscars will do ok since the parrots are a bit larger. What's in the 40? Can the gouramis hang out in there for a bit?

Those loaches... are they zebra loaches (Botia striata)? Most loaches are bad@$$ jumpers. Yeahhhhh most people say loaches are peaceful and shy, but if you read my loach violence thread, you'll see why I just go by the fact that most fish are unpredictable. I think if you're careful and watch closely, you should be able to intervene if things aren't working out. I would do the parrots with the oscars, and leave the gouramis in the 40g. At least, that's my opinion. And I'd watch closely. I loved my oscars but yeah... danger. :) Good luck! Keep us posted.

Like the above stated I would give the parrots a try with the oscars as long as the size is similar and let them grow together, as for the others I would put them in the smaller tank. Unless you like to watch your oscars tear some shiiiii up! LoL!

Ack! So wrong... but yeah that'd be awesome.

I was P*SSED when that loach went all mad-cow on a platy. But a vid woulda been impossible cuz of how fast it all was. Oscars are slow and messy so you'll have plenty of time to power on the camera.

ScorpiosWife-- do not place one of these in with your gouramis. If so, please keep camera ready per above suggestion.

Right now, all 6 we just got are still hanging out with each other in the 40g (which turns out is a 37g!) & the loaches are doing power jumps now and then (hoping one doesn't play "meet the tile" before hubby makes us a top or we find one to fit!) The gouramis aren't bothering the parrots, but I would LOVE to try putting them in with my Oscars. So... in the morning, in they go! It's worth a shot and everyone in that 37g needs some room. Yall are cracking me up & hubby is sleeping right next to me... lol.

Bee.. I searched for the loaches that are like these for HOURS tonight and came up with NOTHING that looks just like them. They have very distinct uniform black stripes (not like a zebra). These are thick, up and down, black stripes. I'll get a pic of them tomorrow & also of the parrots (which I'm thinking are Blood Red Parrots & they're ADORABLE!)

I shoulda took a video the other night when we caught a baby gecko and fed him to the tiger oscar. One gulp and all that was left was the tail hanging outta the tiger oscar's mouth, justa twitchin! Soon enough, that was gone too and the albino couldn't figure out what the heck the tiger was eating. She searched and searched & finally gave up. Today I gave them some snails and they played with them but didn't eat them....yet.

Man, I hope the parrots and the oscars can be buddies. They would give my "Fall of Pompei" lookin tank some awesome color!

Only time I seen loaches frantically jumping is when either chased or wanting to die.

Loachlympics.... where your trophy is your coffin! *crowd goes wild*

I think they should have called these "launchers". Maybe he will calm down once its not so crowded.

How many did you get again?

They do better in larger groups

Theres 2, but they're so crowded. The larger one is the insane fruitcake, the smaller one is fairly calm. The floor was dry and it didn't do a triple back flip when I went to the tank this morning, so maybe he's calming down. After the baby gets on the bus I will move the parrots, that will give them a little more room. Hopefully the oscars & dragonfish take to them. I have hope cuz our oscars are young but I will still be closeby, armed with a net!
