  • Our first casualty...

Well, yesterday I was rushing to feed everyone & get out the door to get to the proshop & get back home before the school bus came. Unfortunately, I forgot to put the top back on one of our tanks. Of course, it was the only tank with fish that are notorious for jumping. I came home about 2 hours later to this...

    Fishicide. RIP lil jumper.

We knew there was a risk he'd over-train for the loachlympics. :( RIP. At least he is no longer a John Doe, right?

Yep, and even with the top on the tank, both of them hurled themselves against it a few times a day. It sounded painful and it can't feel good for the little guys. He should get a loachlympic medal with the grim reaper on it, even though he's not a loach. The other one hasn't jumped once since this one committed fishicide, he's been quite calm.

On another note, we think the parrots are nesting. They have dug a hole on the side of the volcano and the bigger one is protecting that area from the oscars. The littler one is kinda poochy and has had a little tube sticking out of her belly for the last few days. Hard to watch her cuz she's taken up housing inside the volcano, lol. I read that if they do lay eggs they probably won't survive, but I am wondering if they would have a better chance if we move them to another tank or partition off their existing tank.

Parrot fish are genetic hybridizations and sterile for the most part. Less than 1% of males are fertile. They will do the dance, and get down and dirty, but the eggs will never hatch.

Hm. Those loaches sound like they were a lil crazy. What's your circulation like? Sometimes they'll be nuts like that if there isn't enough oxygen near the bottom of the tank for their metabolic requirements, since they're so active. But this usually isn't much of an issue in established or mature tanks cuz the bacteria adhering to the substrate and other microorganisms release oxygen themselves. An air stone near the bottom or a circulation pump may help.

Yep B, from day one we've had an airstone on the bottom of the tank & it has plenty of filtration. Those 2 just like to jump! I read about their incredible jumping abilities on every article I could find once you and EK figured out they weren't loaches, afterall. They also like standing on their heads in the corners of the tank & like lots of waterflow. There's plenty of waterflow, but only 4 corners, lol.

As far as the parrots go, I read about their infertility, as well. But on the very tiny chance that they could... I just wanted to give them the best chance possible.
