I've been doing some reading about tropheus, and a question has come up that maybe some of you can help me understand better. I take it from my reading that there are many kinds of algae, and I was wondering why here in my tanks at home, the algae I have on my tanks here is orangish brown where as in other tanks in the past I remember the algae being dark green or even flat black.

Can anyone explain breifly about the difference's in the types of algae and whether it's all good or not?

    Thanks

I have orangey brown algae in my tanks, if you throw a pleco into the tank it should take care of the problem

      Re: Algae

Think that is diatoms.....the brown algae.

There is a really good link on one of the planted tank forums listing all the different algaes.

Check out aquaticplantcentral.com or plantedtank.net they have an algae dedicated subforum.

Also, if you could describe the algae a bit more? Is it stuck flat to the glass with no real depth, is it stringy, or hairy, or clumpy? (All scientific terms, by the way.)

          Re: Algae

yeah, it's pretty much just a "coating" if you will. It looks like a flat layer of dirt or grime that is easily wiped away. I would put pleco's in the tanks to control it, but was worried they may get pesterd by the more agressive cichlids???

You don't have to worry about the plecos....they can hold their own.  And if you need one big enough to hold his own around larger fish.....let me know and he is yours......I've got two of them.  One is about 6" and the other is about 5".  We could trade for some of the many Brichardi fry you have....LOL.

I had to pull my (baby) longfin albino bn's out of the krib tank - the kribs were picking on them.  They don't seem to bother the gold AE that's in there though.  He takes care of any algae in that tank.

                Re: Algae

I appreciate all the input regarding the algae and pleco's and all, but I really wanted to know specifically about Tropheus and algae and if since Tropheus eat algae, if this particular strain of algae I have here would be acceptable for tropeus to eat?

                Thanks...

And yes, Hanson, a trade for some brichardi would be great....when convienent for both parties.

                  and again....thanks

                    Re: Algae

I had no idea, but looking around, I found an interesting article:

The second paragraph under "Discussion" on page 5 lists the types of algae two species of tropheus in the wild were found to be eating...so it seems that depending on their tooth/mouth structure, they'll eat a few different kinds, although not all will be able to easily eat diatoms and such.

Hope that helps, at least a little bit?  :)

Talk to Geoff the Troph Guru....I'm sure he has done extensive study on the subject.  You might want to just shoot him a PM and ask the questions that you need answers to.

My Giant Albino Gourami on 2 seperate ocasions killed off the 16" pleco that I put in his 140g to clean it.   Just pestered him to death.

                              Re: Algae

I started working on a planted tank a couple of weeks ago.
Last week the glass started turning green - my baby plecos are loving it but they arn't making any leeway. This week I have hundreds of tiney MTS all over the glass.   Now I'm getting a dark green or black ring on my bacopia leaves and little fuzz balls on the gravel.

I can get scrub the green algie off the glass but how do I get rid of the black algie ?  How can I thin out all of these MTS ?

                              I'm using a coralife 48" fixture with only the 2 - 10000K bulbs 24h/day
