Re: Taking Idea's of what kind of fishies to stock up on

Definately funky plecos - particularly the varieties that stay small!

I'd love to see a variety of neat looking loaches/botias and since many of them help with snail populations - that alone should make them popular!

Uncommon plants that aren't in the super-special-care/lighting category would be nice too.  I don't think I've seen one stinking madagascar lace plant at any shop around.

Foods in bulk & net dip solutions - things for the many of us that have 30+ tanks/ponds!

Inverts!  I'd like to see some colorful or patterned shrimp locally.  I'm always a sucker for a unique crayfish too, although I think in a month I'm going to be out of space since I think my blue Alleni is going to berry soon.  :(

Who says you can`t have it all??!!

Nice looking adults are great....but having some Juvi size fish on hand for those of us willing or wanting to grow out would be nice.  The price for the younger ones should be nicer on the pocket book too.

Fire Fin Comps would be nice.  I would like to get my hands on some fry or Juvi size ones.

Tropheus is always a winner.  Different Calvus.  Cyps. Young Frontosa.

Ok, im working on my order, i will accomodate as much as i can to this list, for the opening round. Thanks for the list by the way. there were so many things that I just completly forgot about...oops.hehe...I can gaurantee we will have most if not all the fish listed at some point in time. Espicially since most of those are what i like personally.esp.TANGS. And On a side note. I refuse to carry painted, dyed,or tatooed fish. I personally don't agree with doing that to fish. On few occaisions I can say I might end up with a bag or two. Its simply shipping error. We will carry hybrids. Something about my dad and those flowerhorns, as im sure you all remember...30+ tanks...one flowerhorn in each.....yea....won't be that bad here though...I hope..

Don't forget the Otos. Seems simple, but I couldn't find any last weekend. Killifish are cool too.

Re: Taking Idea's of what kind of fishies to stock up on

ok, this isn't going to make me very popular, but what else is new right? Bread and butter is where the money is unfortunately. 90% of your stock needs to be the bread and butter fish that have the fast turn arounds, with the remaining 10% devoted to the special order or unusual. Lets face it, if it sits in the tank, it's costing you money.
As much as I hate to say it, guppies, mollies, platies sell. Any community, schooling fish is going to have the fast turnover and we all know it. When you start talking about specialty items you are limiting your market to a select handfull of individuals. Not that there is anything wrong with that if you keep that in mind when stocking the tanks. 10% exotic for a small but well funded group of enthusiasts seems more than adequate in my book. After all, it's little Johnny spending his allowance that keeps pet stores alive, not people like EK, Tim, Raul, or even myself. Sure, when we hit the store we drop a nice chunk of change, but, we are a small fraction when figured into over all sales figures, we just happen to drop our wallets all at once.
Another factor to consider is initial cost to stock the tanks. As stated previously this is being funded out of pocket, not on a startup loan. Cash is going to be tight. Community fish fortunately don't have the heavy import fees that specialty fish have, they are just to readily available. Initial stocking has got to be something where you can fill the tanks without breaking the budget. What you decide to do down the road may be another story, but, you have got to generate some cash flow before you can commit to stocking tanks with high priced specialty items.
Here are some bread and butter fish that come to mind:
                      Tetras
                      Harlequins
                      Guppies
                      Mollies
                      Platies
                      Hatchets
                      Danios
                      Gourami
                      Otocinclus
                      Cories
                      Rams
                      Angels
Low agression african species like: Labs, Demasoni, Peacocks

You get the idea. Things I would avoid as a start up? Anything with a unit price over $3 before shipping. $3 doesn't sound like much, until you factor in quantity and shipping. As a startup its more about the full tanks than the draw potential for the specialty buyer.
Anyway, just my opinion, and as usual, I'm sure it will be an unpopular one.
Consider my posts as general information based on personal experiences, and in most cases, far oversimplified. Actual mileage may vary. Don't try this at home. If symptoms persist, contact your physician.

I am thinking Scott should hold a LHA meeting there before the store opens, bring beer and BBQ and look at all the new arrivals, then everyone can buy 1/2 of all his stock so Mike can pull his hair out (wait is he bald.. you know I have never meet the man), because he will not have enough fish to open his store... (wait maybe this is a good thing)
