  • Chloramine in my water soon.

I got a letter from my MUD district saying they will be adding Chloramine to the water effective Nov. 15th. I am not happy with it. I am not sure how to adapt my water changes towards this.

All of my tanks are planted and disperse chlorine very well. Alot of water evaporates and I am use to filling a bucket and leaving it out for a few days till the chlorine evaporates and using that to top off my tanks without using chemicals. It seems like I won't be doing that anymore.

Do most chlorine removers also take care of chloramines or will I need a specific product now? Should I start using a carbon filter on my large tank? (this will not work for my shrimp tank). Any help in this area will be appreciated.

I know Prime removes chloramines, my MUD started adding them over a year. I did not notice any problems with my African cichlids.

I bought a rubbermaid tub and put in the bathtub.. I fill it up with appropriately warm water, add prime, and use a submersible pond pump to pump it in to my tank

I bought the 4L bottle of Prime, and it says one cap full treats 100 gallons. Kind of tough to dose when you're only doing a 15-30g WC. Can you overdose prime?

Yes you can and you will know when you do. The water will take on a smell of rotten eggs.

I don't believe you can overdose it to toxic levels unless you do something ridiculous and add 4L to the entire 100 gallons... LOL! The current theory seems to be that if you add double the dose, it helps with the slime coat on most fish. Again, that hasn't really been the standard practice lately but I know some old timers who still do it. It's probably possible to have a mild overdose and have a smelly tank like barrettsline said, but I'm not sure what it would do to the fish. Anyone have experience with this?

Most dechlorinators say on the bottle if they cover chloramines or not. The 2 major products, Prime and Amquel Plus, do cover chlorine and chloramines. You should be ok, djmatthewblack-- where I grew up in California, they have always added chloramines to water and I've never had a problem (even with the more sensitive fish) because I've always used Amquel or Prime.

If overdosed, Prime can deplete the water of oxygen. Our water supply down here has had chloramines for the last 20 yrs. I use prime at double dose and also Zip drops (sodium thiosulfate drops) together due to the periodic shocking the water co. does to the water without notice.

I use Prime on all my tanks, included my planted tanks. Most people with planted tanks use Prime.

I use a python style water changer. I remove the water, add prime, and then refill the water. I don't double dose, but I don't measure precisely either so I dose somewhere between single and double dose. I've been doing it for years. Not a problem. Odds are you won't notice any changes at all.
