  • Black Beauty Abrasive

Have anyone used this as a substrate in their tanks. The lady told me that they sale this all the time to people that are going to put it in their aquariums. Do you know if there are any drawbacks. I found it local for $11.39 per 100lb bag and it comes in xfine, fine & medium.

This is what it consists of.
FREE SILICA – less than 0.1% CHEMICAL ANALYSIS
PARTICLE SHAPE – angular, sharp Silicon Dioxide 48.78%
    HARDNESS – 6 to 7 on the Moh’s scale Aluminum Oxide 20.97%
BULK DENSITY – 75-100 lbs per cubic ft Ferric Oxide 19.08%
depending on gradation Calcium Oxide 6.02%
    SPECIFIC GRAVITY – 2.73 Potassium Oxide 1.67%
MOISTURE CONTENT – less than 0.5% Titanium Dioxide 0.94% Magnesium Oxide 0.90%
    Sodium Oxide 0.62%

    LMK what you think.

    Thanks

Chemical wise it's fine. But it's known to be sharp. So dont use with sand sifters. And if its not a heavier grain it can get into your filter ...bigg no no

I'd keep it away from any cichlids since so many of them move the sand around even if they aren't a sand sifter. Same for any bottom dwelling fish, such as catfish.

Honestly, I wouldn't recommend it for any fish, but if it's in a tank with just tetras or other fish that don't touch the substrate, then it should be okay.

A lot of people used it before on here when cichlidfan offered it to everyone.

I had some of the extra fine with some cichlids with no adverse effects other than not being able to use my gravel vacuum because it was to fine and light weight.

I think it is about $20 for a 50 lb bag.

Estes marine sand is what I was telling you tonight... it has a picture of an animated clown fish on it I believe. They are inert sand and available in different colors.

Stay away from Tahitian Moon sand, the stuff is too fine and compacts easily which is no bueno.
