  • Whats Wrong With This Ad???

What more need be said. Very passive, very large (12-14") freshwater fish for FREE! I bought her/him at a pet store in Stafford for a few bucks about a year ago. They never said he would get this big, but he/she did. Here is a pic of what he/she looks like (no...this is not my fish. However, this is what mine looks like). To put this pic in perspective, mine looks slightly bigger than this one in my 55 gallon tank. He/she has stopped growing. You will need a 55 gallon or larger tank to take proper care of this guy/gal.

Pease send pictures of your tank when contacting me as I will make sure he/she goes to a good home. It is very passive and has never touched any of my other fish (guaramis, tetras, barbs, convicts, and loaches are all in the same tank with no probs). It loves algae chips. and goldfish pellets. I have a big net, you bring the bucket.

Nothing against the guy, but someone should have educated him on this fish when he bought it. And it looks like he still needs some education on the fish. If someone else new to the hobby picks up the fish and thinks its passive and  will fit in a 55g their in for a suprise too...

You'd be passive if you didn't have room to attack, and atleast he said 55 OR larger. That counts for something, right?

I don't even think that these things should be imported.  They all end back up in a pet store with no room to move or getting dumped into the local water ways.  And then you have the likes of your local Walmart and other LFS's selling the little ones as fast as they can get them in.  Just my two pennies worth.

I agree, Hanson. I think these types of fish (those that get HUGE) shouldn't be sold anywhere. I'm not saying I don't like them, I absolutely love pacus. But all the importers are doing is killing these fish by selling them, and sometimes killing natives because they are released into local waters, like you said.

If anything, I'd like there to be a law against selling them unless the buyer special orders them and has the proper housing for them at that moment, maybe even some kind of license like they do with tilapia and such.

EDIT - I know the regulations that govern tilapia and others are not exactly followed by everyone, but it'd be nice to at least have a principle.  :)

I'll bet blue sharks in 10 gallon tanks are pretty passive...

Well, at least I can say I had seen an adult Giant gourami before I bought mine.  I knew they were going to get big but I had no Idea how aggressive they were.

Perhaps, that is a solution.... require the stores to keep at least 1 adult of every type of fish they sell ?????

Naw - you can't make it fool proof, you just find bigger fools.

He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

What I don't get is that there are so many cool fish that don't get that big that lfs can choose to sell instead of these monsters.  Chain stores should cap the max size of fish they sell (for example, at 12" or comparable to the largest tank they sell) and leave the sale of large fish to specialty shops.   Kind of like chain stores don't sell amazon parrots or cockatoos anymore.  I think this would solve a good portion of uneducated purchases (I bought my first oscar from Wal-mart for my 20G tank 10 years ago-I read the max size on their tank and why shouldn't I be able to believe them?).  Just my opinion...

just so you know chain stores can sell big birds, just not PETCO. Petco got sued for mistreating the large birds and having them get sick, Petsmart can and does still sell larger birds, most stores just dont order them very frequently because they dont sell very fast so its an unstable order item. much easier to sell cockatiels and senagal parrots (which are much friendlier) then a few amazons that eventually end up unhappy because they take soooo much time and are so noisy. I love birds, but i love quite ones a lot better (like parrotlets)

oh yeah and i remmember a customer tellin me once that they kept a pacu in a 175 planted because pacu are vegetarian, take a look at their mouth and say that.  and moody gardens have some over 2 ft, ans just so you know yeah petsmart does sell pacu (and i hate that we do) but it does say 22 inches on max size which is fairly reasonablely accurate for a chain and pretty close.

I am proud to say that in my 12 months at petsmart I never once sold one.
