  • easy way to remove fish from tank??

    Hello fellow fishbox members,
I was wondering if anybody has found an easy way of removing fish from a tank w/o having to take everything out of it?My 110 still has 4 yellow labs,2 ahli females and 1 sunshine that I would like to move to another tank, but really dont want to mess with the 80lbs of rock that Ive got in there, besides my frontosa are already making themselves at home burrowing and building their own territories.Any feed back would be great,Ive heard of those tubes that you use to get rid of the undesired fish out of your tank but was wanting to go the DIY route.Oh by the way the fish are around 3-4" long.
    thanks

most of mine are very easy to get at ~ feeding time in the same spot - they converge for food when I open the cover

You know, mine are like that too. They crowd the front of the tank whenever they even THINK they saw me. But they also know what a net is, or if they don't, they remember very quickly.  :)

I actually feed frozen food with a small net sometimes in one of my tanks, but if it's an empty net, they're gone.

I would try the net thing, although they might not "get it" for a while. Just be patient.

Have you been chasing them around today with the net?

Have you tried 2 nets? Or 2 people?

No I havent really put a net in that tank in a while, but they spoke easily due to my infant son always trying to bang on the stand.Ill try the net,but I dont think it will work, just from my experience in the past,Ill have to get my mr miagi net skills out and prove that the hand is faster than the eye!!
          thanks

If I just leave my net in the tank for awhile one of my fish alway ends up in it.  I think they see it as cover once its left in for awhile and isn't darting at them.  But catching them at feeding time works the best if you don't want to pull everything out.

Yellow labs are the hardest fish to catch.

              Good Luck!

10:1 you will have to remove all that rock to get them out of there.

Easy...Drain all the water out, then you can scoop up the fish and then put the water back....

                I couldn't resist....sorry.

Geoff isn't lieing one bit.....I chased a small one around my 40 gallon with everything removed for about 15 minutes when it came time to sell them.  It was like he knew that he was leaving and was trying to tell me to leave him there....LOL!!!!

Nothing is harder than catching a fish in a rocky tank !

But you can get a fish trap for about $5 at academy,
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

well this one its kind of crazy but it could work.
what i do its when its feeding time , you knock your fingers , that way the fish will get used at you
and associate the sound of your fingers, with food.
this way anytime you want to net your fish with out feeding them you just knock your fingers an they will come to you.

Re: easy way to remove fish from tank??

is there a way to split the tank? you can use an egg crate to split the tank, that way the fish is isolated and easier to catch.  although might be difficult to split a rocky tank.

                            Howdy,

PhishPhreek has an excellent idea using the fish trap from Academy; your tank is big enough to do this.  We have been trying to catch swordtails out of our friends fish pound for a year and only catch a few because they are to fast and hide.  Mark used his $5 fish trap put some floating fish food in it and in the last two weeks caught over 80 of the swordtails over a couple hours.  Yesterday he even figured out how to catch the babies by setting the trap on a regular fish net with smaller netting and he just lifts up that net when the babies are in the trap and catches fish in all sizes.  later, ken
