Purigen will remove the elements causing the acidic water. Tannins are a major contributor amongst others to it. Well let us know how it goes maybe if you have the right mix. But when I ran peat and IAL in my discus tank it wasn't that yellow but I also wasn't running a ton either. You are probably better off doing an RO unit. Which makes it clear and soft

RO unit = $$. I'd like to try this first. Here's what Seachem has to say on the matter:
"Using Purigen will not have any impact on the benefits of peat. While Purigen will remove the color bodies, unlike carbon and other chemical filtration medias, it does not remove trace minerals. So, you can use Purigen without losing the pH buffering ability and the trace elements produced by the peat. However, because it will remove the color bodies, the water would be fairly clear and Purigen would not be the product to use if you were seeking a blackwater look to the tank."
I'm gonna try it and see what happens. Will keep you posted.

Hmm... maybe you weren't running enough of the peat?
In my shrimp tank I have about 6-7 IAL in a media bag and 2 Alder cones in the tank and my pH is hovering 6.2-6.4 with a tap of 8.0-8.2 with crystal clear water.

I have started to add the Alder cones to see how well they hold up since they come in a much smaller package then the IAL and supposedly like 10x as potent.
fyi my daughter was just hired by Memorial Hermann. Nice for a 1st post college job.
Glad to hear she made it!! Very awesome news.
Yeah, I'm not sure why emperors aren't more common. They're peaceful, not too sensitive, and really fun to watch. I'm already seeing some mating behavior.
