Well I figure I should update this thread now, nearly 2 years later. After the death of nearly everyone in the tank including the wild adult geos from a WC mishap, I got 8 F1 red head juvenile tapajos from beto almost a year ago now (April 2013). They've been absolutely amazing to watch and grow out. Colors are just stunning. Last weekend I added a 1400 gph power head to the tank and they immediately started showing breeding behaviors, with one pair circling and flaring at each other. They cleaned off a rock and sometime last night or this morning, they laid eggs! Their first spawn. I'm excited though I know that the first spawn is rarely successful. The female is guarding them fiercely and is far more vicious to tank mates that wander too close than even the male is. Their pectoral fins have become really intense in color, almost black and electric blue.
From what I've read online by one of the tapajo gurus, I should have wiggles in 3-4 days that will be held in both parents' mouths for a week or two. After that time it'll be safe to siphon them out or strip the parents if I decide to.
Will post some pics, though the eggs are the same color as the fossil rock and hard to see. Thanks for reading!
