  • Black Lights ?

Has anyone put black lights over a fish tank ?  How do the fish handle it ?  Obviously I was wondering more in the line of fish that may not get a ton of light in their natural life, but may color up better under a black light.

I think I read something about the UV or something like that causing problems... I might be off though.

      Re: Black Lights ?

The only relatively common fish that will actually glow with a blacklight are the (engineered) Glofish (danios).  There may be others, but I actually took a blacklight to a couple of LFS's to test this.

And yes - they did think I was a bit weird.

Now that sounds like a cool looking tank for a kid's room!  Except they might have trouble sleeping with something that fun to look at.

Funny I've been wondering this myself-  I've got a bunch of glowfish and I'm considering really doing a cheesy looking tank on purpose- like the crazy bright/colorful air movement ones you see at fish gallery-

I checked with Fish Gallery on the phone just now- They use an actinic light- usually used for Salt water- but works well with bringing out the Fluorescent colors.

As for the black light- Fish Gallery says they don't penetrate as well...

I'm getting one this weekend!  Cheesy Fish carnival here I come!

            Re: Black Lights ?

My other thought about it was to have a dual bulb canopy where one of the two lights was a black light.  Just wondering.. I may try it out one of these days.  I will let you all know.. what about plants, how would they handle black light injection ?

              GatorRock, can't wait for pictures!

And Zulaab, that dual light sounds like a good idea, but I have no experience so it's just my opinion.  How long are you planning on running the black lights?  That might make a difference if you only use it when you want to view it or if it's a more regular thing.

I have a 20G planted I am thinking about going dual light.  I might put in a black light in one of them and see what happens... like a Black light and a 10000k light
