  • help with wrong type of silicone on tank reseal

    Ive got a chance to get a 150 gallon setup pretty cheap,the only problem is that it was resealed with automotive silicone.My question to all of you, is due you think this tank is salvagable??Even if I get all the silicone out will I have a problem with fish dying??Iam still up in the air about this and could use some help

    I'd say if your getting it really cheap, there is minimal risk, go for it.

      It would have to be very dirt cheap for me to pay to have to reseal it.

          If its just tank & stand .25 cents per gallon.

            I'm not sure of how much risk there is here, that is what needs to be determined. It sounds like it could be a lot of work, but maybe not???

            Further research is really needed here.

                As a automotive tech, I know that automotive silicone is toxic to aquatic
                life,so Iam concerned that it may seep into the water and kill all my fish.
                And the reason I said it was cheap was because Iam trading my 75 for it.
                Just concerned,anybody else have any ideas?

                  If you know what the toxic ingredient is, maybe you can find out more about it, like is it still toxic after it's cured, or just when wet? I've heard that even some kiddie pools are toxic to fish because they put algae inhibitors or mold inhibitors in the plastic, but eventually they'll break down with exposure.  I'd sure want to test it a while before going to the work of setting it all up, though.
