  • discus eggs

My discus finally laid some eggs.  It hasnt laid any eggs since one of them died, but today I found some on the driftwood when doing a water change.  I want to ask you guys that raise discus on how to take care of the eggs.  The discus are in my ocmmunity tank, and I'm afraid the other fish will come and eat it.  Right now the parents are guarding the eggs pretty good.  Can I just take the parents out along with the eggs to a seperate tank?

The pics arent so good since they lay the eggs on the back side of the driftwood was difficult to take a picture.

    Re: discus eggs

You can take them out but be very quick about it. Try to use as much water from the community tank as possible.
No promises that the discus will care for them after that. But your better off moving them then letting them stay in the community tank as they will get eaten if they will even go free swimming.

Have the eggs even started to have a black dot in them yet. If after a day & no black spot the male did not do his job.
Also how hard is you water?
I have never been able to keep any eggs when layed in a community tank yet. This does not mean you will be unable to do it.

I will try to look for the black spot Walter and get back with you.  Its so hard to look at it though since its at the back spot of the driftwood.  Have to get to the side to take a look.  Should I just like cut that part of the driftwood along to or move it by hand?

If the driftwood is not to big. Move the whole thing.
Just be ready for the bite you will get & they do know how to bite hard.

Walter how long you say the eggs have black spot a day before moving them.  I think these eggs are only a few hours at most because I didnt see them before the water change.  They do bite hard like u said lol I try sticking my hand in.  I didnt notice yesterday they bit me to when I cut some of the plants.

            Re: discus eggs

If they bit you yesterday then they had eggs yesterday.
Your probable better off just letting the eggs go this time & move them to a 29 gallon tank.
If you like try to move them.

Hey Walter can I ask you a quick question?  Can I use a canister filter instead of a sponge filter?

I would suggest you add a sponge on the intake or add a piece of panty hose with a rubber band to ensure that fry dont get sucked up.

Ok they lay eggs today again, but I found out they were both females.  I have like 7 left do I just put a random one in with 2 of them to see if they fertilize the eggs?

                    Re: discus eggs

You can try that but it takes time for a male & female to pair up.
Or you could let me have one of them & I will split the babies with you.

Sorry for not seeing your post of canister.
You can use a canister but slow moving water.

                      Re: discus eggs

I would say doubtful.  First the male has to be in an "excited state" before he is ready to fertilize the eggs.  I also believe that the eggs after a certain amount of time will not "accept" the milk, as they harden in the water..  ie the eggs will become infertile, and shortly after that they will start decaying.

I'm just going to put a cover over the eggs and see how it goes from there.

Now another one just lay eggs on another branch.  I'll see how it goes, might just have to buy a male.

They were orinally bought as 4 pairs with the other 2 unkown.  If I buy a male how would it pair up when at home?
