Is anyone using an automatic system to do water changes ?

    Adjust pH ?

    Maintain water level ?

    Feed fish ?

    Control Lighting ?

    Raise live food ?
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

    Re: Automation

That's something that I've always wanted to do, but some of those controllers are quite expensive. I think I'm going to do some sort of x10 system for all of the simple things. Not sure about the ph stuff though. I do use simple timers for the lights. I would love to hear everyone else's ideas though.

      Re: Automation

I use timers on my lights and I use automatic feeders.  I am out of town quite a bit so the automation started out as a necessity, but quickly became the routine.  With the auto feeders I don't have to worry as much about over/under feeding and can still give the special treats as needed by hand.  I have my lights timed so the moonlights turn on shortly before the regular lights turn off and turn off shortly after the regular lights turn on.

On the feeders I tried several types/brands and have found for me, the Eheim, although more expensive is the most reliable and flexible.
Reasoning with some people is like trying to nail jello to a wall...

        Re: Automation

I use light timers and automated water exchange. My main growout tanks are on a system which exchanges roughly 30% total water volume a day, the rest of my tanks are on a manual system, that is, siphon and hose, hehe.

I have a betta breeding friend that has set up a headder with lines to his betta tanks.  One valve on the low side of the headder drains water out and one valve on the hi side of the header lets treated water in.   Unfortunately the shutoff system is eyeball and on more than one occasion he has been distracted and flooded his fishroom.

How do you do your auto water changes ?

Centralized sump with a float valve and waste line as well as a return line. A portion of the water returned to the tanks is diverted to waste, and fresh water is added via the float valve to replace it. Luckily I am on a well, so my water is nice and clean and free of annoying things like chlorine and chloramines, and a nice stable 8.2

I have roommates that I can bribe with dinner and/or bottles of booze to feed the fish while I'm out of town.
