  • Mosquito larvae ??

I saw mosquito larvae mentioned a couple times and was wondering if this was really a good thing to feed the community fish? I have a tub outside and thought it might be good to net some as food. Most of the time I dump the water to keep the pest down to a minimum.

as long as you are certain no pesticides and fertilizers have made their way into the tub... mosquito larvae is "bloodworms".

OH, didnt know they were blood worms. That makes alot of sense though. I cant believe I have been paying for these and I dump them out all the time.

Mosquito larvae is the main thing my father in law fed all his Beta. They loved it

small tetras love them as well, you will prolly see little black bean looking things swimming around in there too. they are called water fleas and are good for the fish as well. just make sure the water you are pulling them from is fairly clean and not stagnant. also watch out for small predators like water scorpions being mixed in with them. they can take down small fish

the term bloodworm is used on a number of different critters but if i recall correctly, and i may not be, the blood worms sold as fish food are the larvae of a midge fly. the adults look like a mosquito but have different antennae and dont bite. some of these types of larvae are clear and these are sold as glass worms.

Sorry bro, but bloodworms that we buy frozen or dried and feed to our fish are the larvae of chironomous midges, not mosquitoes.

As stated, mosquito larvae are safe and nutritious to feed to your fish as long as they aren't contaminated. I used to raise pearl gouramis in kiddie wading pools. I never fed them. They lived entirely on insect larvae during the time they stayed outside.

Just a reminder, if you feed mosquito larva and your fish don't eat them all, you will have mosquitoes in the house. :)

Would be better if I could just get the mosquitoes in the house to breed in the tank. Then I wouldnt have to worry about the tub outside. :

yeah my aquariums are better than bug zappers, the mosquitos that get inside are drawn to them to lay their eggs and then they get got. unfortunately they bite me first.
