  • :?: What do you do with fry?

My German Blue Ram fry is 3 weeks old  I guess they have a good chance to survive now.
It makes me think what to do with them when they get bigger.
What do you do with fry? When they are grown enough for new home?

btw, i would like 4 at that time (hopefully 2 pairs) but i realize they might not be adults at that point and sex might not be easily distinguished

Re: What do you do with fry?

You can post them for sale here since most rams are weak and not accustomed to our waters when they are brought in at LFS's I would imagine they would sell a lot easier.

        Local bred and raised.

I would be interested in about 10 of them if they make it.

Re: What do you do with fry?

            OK I'll post them here.
I'll have to see how long I can keep them in between my 55gal and 10gal. It's only about 40 of them right now (even fine gravel is a poor choise for a breeding tank - very small fry gets stuck in it) , but I don't know how fast they will grow.

Parents keep trying in the community tank, but all eggs get eaten before day3  - I suspect by my tetras - too many and too fast to keep away.

Re: What do you do with fry?

As far as how fast they grow, it all depends on diet and clarity of water.  Feed good quality food and do plenty of water changes and you can get them up to size in no time.

But this is always a good place to post fry.  Just like EK said, tank raised in our water is the best way to go with the Germans.  You will have no issues moving these little guys once they get some size.

              I wouldn't mind a few of them...LOL.

Yeah, if there are any left, I know fishlady would like a couple too?

                Good Luck with them....

Well, I think you got your answer as to what to do with the fry! Actually, I think they all have future homes!

That's so great that you have so many survivors. How big are they now?

When I have 100+ young bettas (typical spawn size)
the bad ones go for a swim with my flowerhorn
the good ones I trade for credit at the LFS
the great ones I save for breeders or trade/sell to other breeders

ps you can add me to the wantum list also

Re: What do you do with fry?

Been having a run of bad luck lately.
Everytime I have a nice spawn,
I wind up in the Hospital for 2 weeks and loose them all.
Next month Ill be spawning to produce Bettas for the spring show circuit.
So I should have some really nice ones in March.
