  • Rummy Nose Tetra

I've been wanting to keep this fish for quite some time.  Mike has some at a good price.  Anyone here have experience keeping this fish in Houston waters?  Fairly soft, slightly acidic water is not quite what my area is known for.

Also would it be an ok tank mate with my Red Cherry Shrimp.

    Thanks

    Re: Rummy Nose Tetra

I have 12 in one of my 75 gal South American dwarf tank. I have had 8 of them for over 1 year and are a good size. I just added 4 from Mike.  I needed to drip acclimate them for more than 1 hour. Fish Gallery has larger healthy specimens at 2.49 ea There is a discount of 10 for $20.00 I think. They  keep them in Houston water but I believe they may treat the water a little bit. They may not need to be acclimated as long.

My water is 0-2GH and 5.5 - 6.5 PH which has taken some efforts since I live in Houston too and so my experience is not  with Houston water out of the tap.

    Hope this helps.

I'm pretty sure Mike is holding them in "Houston waters" right now.

Mike has a well in back so it isn't tap.

jklntx - what have you done to lower the PH and soften the water?

Has anyone cared to test the waters there?

I mean I see a lot of buying from there and I know when I care to know I ask for samples.

In my crystal red shrimp and red cherry shrimp I am using ADA Aquasoil to lower ph/hardness along with lots of almond leaves but the CRS tank also gets lots of co2.

Aquasoil is very comparable to all the other commercial plant substrates in price but does a wonderful job at what its suppose to do. When I had my Apistogrammas gold triple red cacatuoides they loved the water and bred on several occasions.

              MateFrio,

I have 10 Rummys and keep them in ordinary tap Houston water just adding a little bit of CO2 which brings the pH down from 7.8 to 6.7.
Once you have them in your tank they are easy and go along with shrimp. Be careful while introducing them to your tank, do it slowly and add/mix the water several times. Also when you change water use one which seats at least 24 h to get rid of chlorine, don't have to use any of these water conditioners. The red nose is really good indicator of the water conditions.

It has taken me a while, but I am at 99% RO, Driftwood, peat and Thai almond leaves.
