      Re: wild caught plecos

Would the plecos in our local waterways only be ones that were released by people who didn't want them or couldn't keep them anymore? Wouldn't that be an introduced species and not a true wild species? Just wondering...I have no clue if we have any native wild plecos or not... In Manvel (near Alvin and Pearland) I saw a lot of giant applesnails that took over a local bayou. I was just wondering if this is the same kind of deal with the plecos because these snails were released by a pet owner.

There are giant plecos in that park on allen parkway.  I have stroll there a couple of times and seen some huge ones.  They try to get a quick get away when they feel the vibration when u walking near by.  I mean these are huge.  At least 12 inches also saw some kinda fish that resemble a gar.

              Re: wild caught plecos

Yup. Actually, guppymax and I went on a pleco safari about a year ago near downtown, saw a HUGE one! And I have 2 in one of my native tanks that I caught as babies in Florida, near Tampa. I have some photos in the gallery, but I think that's still disabled.

Let me look around, there are a few posts on here that document what we've caught.  :)

Here are some that I found. I'm biased, of course, because I just looked for threads on things that I participated in...but it's a start!

                    Re: wild caught plecos

There is a small pond near 1960 and 290, off of Wortham road, where I have personally seen 12 to 15 inch plecos. I am not sure why they where "huggin" the retension wall that surrounds the pond, but I did see maybe 50 or more of these huge pleco's last fall. Without major preditors, there should be even more this fall.

Buffalo Bayou, Braes Bayou, White Oak Bayou, and Hall Bayou have plecos and other non native fish living in them.

Buffalo Bayou runs near my place. (59& I-10) interchange. I'm going to go down one day and look around.

The pond is actually part of the wortham housing district, making it public property. It is a fairly decent place to have a picnic or do some casual fishing, but there are not too many game fish in it. We have caught bass and I have seen some blue gill's, but that's about it.
