  • jewel and convict cichlid

well, just a thought, has anyone ever tried or seen keeping a pair of jewel and a pair of convitc cichlids together?

they are both aggressive, not so particular with water and other needs and prolific breeders, 1 pair of each in a 55 gallon should be a nice and constant show?

In the 55g they should work fine but IME the convicts are probably 10x more aggressive then the jewels.......which never really seem aggressive when I had them.

i c, from all i read about jewels, everyone seems to write that they are very aggressive and territorial and cannot be kept with other fish while spawning unless the other fish are also aggressive and can hold their own, but i guess its all relative, what are good mates for convicts that are similar size around 6" as adult and can hold their own?

You can try the jewels but try and put everyone in at the same time.

I had a pair of Jewels that never showed an ounce of agression.  I had them in a 55g full of Peacocks and Mbuna so there were so many fish that any agression got stifled pretty quick anyway.

i guess if the tank is full with many fish there is little room for too much aggression by anyone, one of the display tanks at fish gallery (the first one on your right as you walk in the display room - the one next to the office) has a bunch of different cichlids including 3 white/pink convicts, they seem to be doing fine with the rest of the fish there, i even observed a pair have babies there and try to save them, but i don't think the babies lasted more than a week (got eaten by other cichlids), this was about 4 or 5 weeks ago i would say, other than petco/petsmart i have not seen jewels in the LFS's much, do people not like them?  they are so colorful i would have thought they would be popular but i have not seen one thread here talking about them!

                Finfan,

Convicts and Red Jewels should have no problem living together..
Convicts are South Americans and Jewels are Africans, but they both enjoy the "rainwater" ie pH of 7.    I will say this from personal experience - Red jewels DIG A LOT - therefore make REALLY sure that all your stones in your tank are dug all the way down to the bottom of your subtract so you dont have an accidental rock formation slide in your tank.

Btw (I didnt have this but after seeing pictures) I would put a large piece of driftwood in the tank, if you can find it.  The Red in the Jewel really stands out well against it.

                  Re: jewel and convict cichlid

yes i heard about the digging thing and i have seen convicts moving gravel around when spawning too, so i am thinking using regular gravel when i set up that tank, also i still want live plants in the aquarium - i have made it a rule that all aquarium i have from now on will have live plants of some sort, i am thinking anubias nana on driftwoods and hornwort or water sprite so that i don't have to worry about planting in the substrate

                    I think all/most cichlids dig.

With anubias, ferns or moss you can tie it dw or rocks.
