  • Alternative Food Sources

Ok, I'm trying to learn about alternative food sources for fish other than what's available at the LFS's. For example, I've read you can't feed Betta's pea's but you can for other freshwater fish, etc and I found this interesting home made recipe for fish food as well. http://www.loaches.com/articles/home...rozen-fishfood
I only have freshwater fish but find this subject interesting!!
So, please tell me what type of veggies get fed to which fish, do you have a recipe you use for your fish; I'd love to get more info regarding this subject!!

I feed mi fish & inverts many different veggies. Cucumbers, zuccinni, carrots, spinach, organics leafy greens. I believe, The problem with fresh foods is they tend to foul the water quicker. Its okay for an occasional treat though. I feed my pleco tank some vegg everyother night. What types of fish will you be feeding? Have you seen repashy foods?

20g Tank - Betta (one male & one female), 2 female Guppy, 3 Kuhli Loach (will eventually have 6) and looking for some Zebra Nerites for this tank as well!!
40g Breeder-1 Breeding pr of Med-Lrg Angels, 4-long fin Danio, 1-Molly and 2-Ram's--Tank under treatment for Ich. Once Ich is gone and everything is ok this tank will eventually have 3 pr of SA dwarf cichlids added and the Molly and Angels will be re-homed.
What are repashy foods, I have never heard of that before?

The only fish we have that we feed home prepared food is Our pufferfish. They are more of a meet eater, hunter we just ad vitamins to crab or gulf shrimp. Limon and Lime are not real big so you have to cut everything to a size they can handle.
the recipe is cool. If your going to go through all that. I think there are some things you could change. For example. All the meets they used fresh(raw) meet but cooked shrimp. Why not fresh? Also I think beef heart would be better then liver. The V8 is. A great short cut. Vitamin rich. But that much food would last a year or more. I may have to try this...

I'll check out the web site; thanks! No Apistos, I am going for Laetacara Curviceps and Nanacara Anomala. I found a breeder for both of these on another forum, she is out of state though. Can't find the L. Curviceps locally; finding wrong variety of Curviceps only and so far I haven't checked around for the Nanacara yet.

My old loach shoal loved cucumber, zucchini, peas (skin removed) & the occasional cricket. I also had a small breeding tank full of pond snails & MTS that I gut-loaded with NLS & veggies, then fed to the clowns once a week. I did use that recipe from loaches.com as a base for a homemade de-worming food when I had them in QT, but that was so long ago I dont even remember what changes I made to it...

So are there any veggies to avoid for fish? I ask this since Betta's will get sick if they have peas. Do fish need to be "trained" to eat veggies? I tried offering a cucumber slice and it was ignored.
