  • Fry tank question...like anyone is surprised, lol.

I have decided to use my 10g snail tank, which I turned into the hospital tank, for a fry tank for the guppies & mollies. Snails...hospital....fry.

NOTHING has been in that tank since we had the freaky water thing in late May. I changed the filter on it 2-3 weeks ago & added water to it to top it off. That's all the changes that were made before I cleaned it out today.

I took everything outside, removed the gravel, washed the tank out with water from the hose & wiped it down as I went. Really wasn't bad! I expected it to be slimy & gross, but it wasn't. Gravel is still in a bucket in the garage and won't be put back in. Washed the plastic plants too & am debating on whether they're needed or not. I really want some java moss or java fern but have yet to find any.

I syphoned 5 gallons of water from the community tank where the fry are now into the fry tank, added another 5 gallons of dechlorinated water, plugged in the heater & filter with the same filter media from 2-3 weeks ago.

Haven't moved the fry yet. Wanted to ask if I should wait and let it run for a few days before I move them, is it ok to move them now, tomorrow? What's my time frame for waiting to move the babies? Should I throw in a few fish from the community tank for a few days to help speed things along?

Any suggestions, comments, or input is appreciated! Tank you!

I kinda did the same for my fish. Expect your filter was running for 2 weeks already, right? I just took media out of another and let it run for a couple hours before I added my fish.

New filter media has been running nearly 3 weeks with nothing in the tank. I do all the changes on Saturdays so tomorrow will be 3 weeks. Should be ok to put them in today?

I would not put fry in the tank unless you're absolutely sure it's cycled.

What are the facts? Again and again and again--what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your only clue.

Well, so far so good. 14 in there now. First batch for 6 hours, 2nd batch of 2 day olds for 4 hours. Gonna check parameters again in the morning but for now all seems well.

since it's a fry tank, will you be doing water changes on it more often? if so that will help keep your water good. I have to say I'm really bad about cycling. I just fill a tank and drop fish in. And most of my tanks are bare. I am much better at the water changes now since we realized our water is being so funky. For some reason our ph keeps droping and I have to change a lot of water each week to keep it from going below 6.0

Yeppers, I will be doing regular water changes. Our pH here doesn't seem to fluctuate much. Then again, we're not on city water either.
