I'm going to set up something smaller upstairs, since my 150 failed last week. I'm thinking a standard All-Glass brand 55 gallon 'tall', but I'm open to other ideas in that size range if anyone's seen anything interesting and reasonably reliable. I want something 48" long or close to that, since I already have lights that size I want to use.

good question. I can get the standard 55 A-G tank and stand for about $300, I believe. Too bad I didnt' know I'd want one when the sale was on last month, or I could have saved a few bucks there. I really like the curved front look (like on the Jebo / Odyssea tanks you could find for a while there) and would probably risk having light problems to get one of those. I'd like to keep it under $400, without lights, since the 150 is pretty much a total loss as far as I'm concerned and I'm giving it away. I thought about shopping second hand for a 55, but I'd rather have a new one.MY MANTRA: Yes, I CAN have too many fishtanks!Comment

Personally unless I have something like Angels or live bearers in it, I don't like the design of the standard 55G 4ft tank. It does not give enough bottom area specially need for most cichlids to feel good..
Now a Oceanic 58G 3ft tank which is 18in deep or a standard 75G 4ft tank which is 18in deep is a much better choice in my opinion.
Lastly... bigger bottom area also means less surface pressure under the tank.

My cichlids sure felt secure enough in my 55.....they bred like rabbits while they were in it. Now when you start talking about South American monsters, yes I can see your point.
And for someone who likes 75's so much....why is yours empty...LOL!!!!Comment

Because I just got the 75G two weeks ago, and I dont have the money to get glasstops, lights, heater, two good canister filters, I have not yet been on the Geoff_Tropheus Rock Dig III for the holey rock going into the tank, the stand has not yet been build.. damn there is so much work to be done..
You are correct Hanson.. I am lazy which is why its not up yet... and Mike has not gotten the fish in that I want to put in the tank.

Easy there boss.....just gigging ya a little. Did you get one of the 75's from Mike? You could work at his shop like slave labor until you pay off the money to get everything you need for your tank...????
Nobody was calling you lazy, I have two tanks right now full of water that just don't have fish in them because I keep changing my mind as to what I want in them. Then to top it off....I'm buying another 75 Friday to complicate my life even more....LOL!!!!Comment

The deeper the tank, the better weight distribution on your 2nd floor structure. The Shorter your tank is the less weight on the floor.
So caution sugests you look for a short fat tank.
I personally like deeper tanks because they landscape better.

you could easily cap off the reef ready bulk heads if you wanted to,but I wont tempt you any more,oh btw the 90 is the same footprint as a 75 but taller.

Yes, the 150 'failed' as in water began flowing out the bottom corner(s). I never had it really level, so I guess what They Say is true...it matters.
The new tank will be mostly for angels, it looks like, since I'm currently raising a group I got at the HLA auction and the guppies now have their own tank (just in time). The biggest things in the tank will be my three clown loaches @ 4 inches and 2 bristlenose. I have an good old 58 gallon oceanic, but like Phish says, I just think the taller, longer tank will be prettier there. I'm sure the 90 would look terrific, too, but I'm trying hard to remember that what goes Up the stairs, must someday come down them, too.
