Malawi and Tanganyika both have a high TDS, of which magnesium makes up almost 9 ppm and around 43 ppm respectively. Addition of magnesium to the tank up to those values comes closer to duplicating lake conditions.

What are the facts? Again and again and again--what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? salts are ionic compounds (metal & nonmetal), with that definition & our handy periodic table, one can see the abundance of salts there are.

Googling led me to a site where a guy created his own salt blend.
Something like: ocean salt / epsom / baking soda.

I visited API's web site marsfishcare.com and took a look at the msds sheet.

          This stuff is sodium chloride.

Sodium chloride is what aquarium salt is - used to help gill function, help fish deal with nitrogen cycle issues, creates a less lethal Nitrite stage etc.

Magnesium Sulfate is epsom salt - is not a salt but a mineral which will increase hardness, help with digestion, swim bladder issues etc.

Two different things and not both salts.

Thanks for clearing that up. I think I heard about the two being different but it seems I have a memory of a senile old person.

When I use regular salt, it doesn't act as a laxative. The fish poo normally after a loooong while, but once I put in Epson salt, the tank is loaded with poo in minutes!
