Epsom salt can be maintained in tank water with no ill effects for the fish. I have it in my tank always and my fish are healthy, hungry and grow fast.
Malawi and Tanganyika both have a high TDS, of which magnesium makes up almost 9 ppm and around 43 ppm respectively. Addition of magnesium to the tank up to those values comes closer to duplicating lake conditions.

What are the facts? Again and again and again--what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your only clue.
Sodium chloride is what aquarium salt is - used to help gill function, help fish deal with nitrogen cycle issues, creates a less lethal Nitrite stage etc.
Magnesium Sulfate is epsom salt - is not a salt but a mineral which will increase hardness, help with digestion, swim bladder issues etc.
When I use regular salt, it doesn't act as a laxative. The fish poo normally after a loooong while, but once I put in Epson salt, the tank is loaded with poo in minutes!
