  • Holding tank okay?

I am keeping my fish in a 26 gallon tank, while my 55 gallon tank cycles. Right now I have 7 masked Julie's, 2 lelupi, 2 CALVUS. They are all juveniles within 1-2 inch. Can I hold them in my tank until my other tank cycles? Plus how long will it take for my fish tank to cycle if I am placing substrate, water, and rocks from my cycled tank

the fish will be fine for the time being. what about a filter? if it was me setting up a tank and i placed in substrate, rocks, and tank water from a cycled tank. fish would go in with in 8hrs. but that what ive been doing for a long time now.

my 55g took about 72 hr all new. That was a long time ago and I will never do that again. Now I will use a cycled filter to start the tank. I will set up new filter on a cycled tank a week befor. Set the tank up. move the cycled filter and ad fish.

Your holding tank will be fine and the fish will look great in there new home...
      Good luck.

I had a same question, sorry not trying to thread jack but what is using substrate that has the good bacteria already in it and adding the bacteria in a bottle stuff?

you can do that to help maintain the bacteria in an aquarium and jump start a bacteria process.

I have seen the bottle stuff but never used it.
I do know the the good bacteria will need a place to colonies. Like a sponge bio ball or filter pad. The substrate will also hold this bacteria but it's the filter that's important. If you use it to cycle. It will cycle instantly.

Substrate with good bacteria already in it will help cycle your tank faster since you already have a colony set up. The bacteria stuff in the bottle seems to work for some people, but I've never tried it.

Yes you can. Cycling usually takes a few days if you're placing things that are from your cycled tank. I don't believe in cycling tanks. Just start up a tank from scratch and chunk the fish in. Just make sure you put some dechlorinator in the water before adding fish. I've never had a problem with fish dying due to the tank not being "cycled".

I've done it both ways and a non-cycled tank is a lot easier , but a cycled tank may be safer or at least it feels that way. A properly cycled tank gives me a warm fuzzy felling .LOL

Done it both ways as well. Honestly, either way doesn't bother me.
