  • Kordon breathing bags?

Hey guys! Just wondering if anybody has used the Kordon Breather bags... I've had snails shipped in them and they did fine for the 3 days they were in transit. What are some of you guys' experiences with them? Just wondering for future reference! The website says a lot of things that don't seem to be possible about them.

"Small punctures such as from fish spines often do not penetrate the plastic, and if they do, the molecular structure of the plastic tends to realign and reduce the size of the holes or reseal itself. Some fishes may damage the bag film enough to cause leaks or ruptures. Only experimentation and experience will determine which individual species of fishes are safe to transport, without leakage.  However, even if there is some leakage, absorptive materials in the shipping box can be used to take care of it, without the boxes leaking."

I've gotten several things shipped in them, been extremely pleased.  even overseas shipping - 5 days - my critters were fine.

It's like that Glad trashbag concept.

It supposedly "breathes" so that no o2 is needed to fill the bag and so far it has worked great for me when I recieved small fish/shrimp/snails but I would not want any fish that could puncture it shipped in those bags.

Interesting, I will have to look into them if i ever end up shipping fish, that wont be for a while, unless i just get overloaded with fish and have to move some other then on here.

lol I don't think anyone has had a problem moving fish on here - unless they are way out of the average joe's budget lol.  I have not heard of those bags Rebekah.  Interesting reading though.

I am thinking maybe I will start using them as well.

              Re: Kordon breathing bags?

I read about them on a forum I found through google and it says that you shouldn't double bag with them because that seriously reduces the air flow to just about nothing. The guy said that he personally has only seen one shipment of fish live after being double bagged with them and that was only because the seller put a layer of water between the bags...it could have just been luck though.

My snails were double bagged with the kordon bags, but they had a plant in there with them, so that could explain why they did so well too... He also said that you should not float the bags to acclimate the fish because this will stop the transfer of gasses...so, I guess the theory of the water in between the two bags was just de-bunked...

They seem like they would save LOTS of room in the shipping boxes though without the tops filled with air! I guess it would be good for flat-rate shipping so that you can cram a butt-load of fish in a small space. I am just kinda thinking about in the distant future when my snails get out of control with the breeding... LOL! It's always nice to hear other people's experiences with things too!

                Re: Kordon breathing bags?

Actually float the bag....it helps acclimate the things inside better....it will start to absorb the water into the bag.

I would not put anything cichlid in the bags though....only livebearers, killies, shrimp, snail and the like.

Actually plants respire oxygen when they dont have any light. So you had fish consuming oxygen and the plant consuming oxygen.

Ive double bagged snails to New York and California, 2-3 days flat rate priority mail with no deaths.

Im ignorant of lots of things, ignorance isnt stupidity. You shouldnt be sorry for being ignorant.
The bags seem like a good idea, but you have to allow the package its in to breathe aswell. If you insulate the box properly, then air shouldnt be able to get to the bag, so you have to allow some air inside the box before you seal it.

interesting. i bet smaller cichlids or fry would be ok to ship in bag, since they wouldnt be big enough to go puncturing holes in them. maybe? i dont know.

Fry should be fine but I really think it would be safer to ship them with pure o2 and thicker bags.

I personally will stick with small livebearers/shrimp and the like with the breather bags.

i just had my grammodes pair shipped from dallas next day in kordon bags double bagged. they were shipped next day and did not come for 2 days. all was well with my fish, they hit the tank ready to breed. dont think you are supposed to float the bags though.

I've heard great things about the bags, as well. Some differences are not to double bag and to make sure you have some sort of 'breatheable' partition around each bag.

I also remember reading that article in TFH by Rusty Wessel when it came out. He brought breathing bags to FOTAS last year, too! So I guess he's still happy with them.
