The bigger the better for most if not all fish .Don't tell fish stories where people know you; but particularly, don't tell them where they know the fish.

They are right get the biggest tank you can. Im not certain what the minimum gallons per inch of fish would be. I kept one or two in a 30 for a little while but that was before I really knew much about keeping fish. I have a small one in a community 70 right now.
200 - African cichlids
72 - Salty Bow Front
33 Cube - community
10's - Freshwater Shrimp

I would recommend starting off with some of the smaller species and seeing what you think, the larger ones ger crazy huge and need a lot of space and water. Try a Banded Pygmy Perch, easy to catch and only get <2" or try out a Pirate Perch (not really a perch, but ehhh). They are real oddballs of the fish world and what they lack in looks they make up in attitude and bizarreness while staying relatively small (4-5")In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.
