  • Tank water condition need help loosing fish

Ok I set my troph tank up 2-3 weeks ago. The first day or 2 the water was fairly clear. I used tank water from the 29 I previously had them in, I put the 2213 and the ac20 on both well established filters an added a new wet dry to the tank. The water has went cloudy and now getting a greenish dirty looking tint. I've added some algae fix since I thought it was an algae bloom yesterday that seems to help a lil bit not much. I added carbon today to the wet dry in hopes of helping out. I've lost 2 fish so far and don't wanna loose any more.
    Tested the water
    Nitrate 10ppm
    Nitrite 0ppm
    Ammonia 0ppm
I do bi weekly water changes been doing about 25% since its a new tank no carbon bottle water coming from a community well system use prime to dechlorinate feed 1-2 times a day
    Lighting is a 250 Mh
    Pfs and green schist rock
What can I do clear up the tank and get the water looking good and in better shape

I blamed the algefix on a couple losses a couple months ago. I dont have proof but I cut back on how often I use it.

Sounds like a green algae bloom. Water changes- 50%. Cut the lights off for a few days.

It's possible that you had an algae problem with the old filters and it bloomed in the new tank. When Im dealing with new tanks, I like my main filtration option to be cycled, therefore I would've like the wet dry to be cycled. Doesn't sound like a cycling problem. Stay away from too many chemicals and you'll be fine. I can house the fish for you until everything is back to normal if you need.

When I had my 55 I did two water changes each week. 95% every time. With my 125, I only do weekly 85% water changes.

Depends on how fast you see it goin away. Cutting the light out for a few days will help dramatically. I would daily 50% for the next few days. If you have the means fill a water tank and treat it with prime before you change the water.

If it was me in this situation I'd do 100% water change. The bacteria is in the filter media, if it's already established.

A uv sterilizer would help knock it out as well.

I think I may need to change my lighting as well and get some t5's or cut back on my light cycle I've got it set up for I believe 11 hours right now

Yeah I'd cut it back a few hours. Mine run 8 hours only. But to combat the green water just cut them off for a few days.

I don't think T5 will help. What kind of lighting do you have now?

250 mh is what it says. Seems excessive to me unless you growing plants/corals that need a high level of light. Personally don't know much about MH lights though.

I'm considering buying a 10k 72" led chain on eBay for something like $46. Nothing fancy but it comes with a power supply as well. If I do I think it will be more than enough for my tank.
