Mine probably has too many metals in it from all the meat I eat.

you can buy 5% ammonium hydroxide at ace hardware. its called janitorial strength and does not contain artificial colors, odors, or surfactants. a heater would definately help your cycle along with an airstone.

ya, need to see if I have a small heater laying around, my jager 300's wont fit in the sump. Doesnt the trickle portion of the wet dry do the same thing an airstone would do?

Pretty much. I use sandstones in my wet/dry sump portion

Since I don't have a heater in it I used hot water, but not sure how long it will stay hot

There's multiple ways of using purigen. You could put it in a media bag and toss it in the sump by your return pump. You could put it in a media bag and put it in a HOB filter and put the HOB on your tank or on your sump. The best way to utilize purigen is buying a reactor and pouring the purigen inside of it. It evenly uses up the purigen and it tumbles the purigen so you get better water clarity. Anyway you end up choosing to do is fine though. I just bought two bags of purigen and stuck them in my AC110 and it's doing wonders.

essentially the same effect of a heater, but obviously doesnt last long.

Room temp water is fine for cycling. I agree that you should track the cycle to gauge your progress. Just test daily on ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. Write down the values. You'll be able to watch the peaks and falls of nitrite and nitrate and know to the day when the tank is cycled.

What are the facts? Again and again and again--what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your only clue.

Why don't you trickle the return water from the fx5 onto the bio balls also so you can have bacteria on the bio balls also?

If it's submerged won't it still get bacteria on it?

I was thinking the same with the room temp water. I've never heard of using hot water. I thought that hot water would kill most of the bacteria if not some?

From the picture it seems like the water line is right blow the bio balls

Didn't see that at first. It does look like the water is below the bio balls.
