  • Angels or discus

Ok, so I have my african mbuna up for sale in the fish market. This will leave me with a ~115 gal (60"x18"x24") tank empty with nothing but sand and a sump still running.

What is everyone's opinions on angels vs. discus? I like both but am pretty sure I should only keep one or the other in the tank. I am also not sure on tankmates and exactly how the tank should be setup. I would like to keep the tank south american. I am also not opposed to doing a large group or several groups of the dwarf cichlids from SA.

I figure driftwood and plants such as moss, java fern and maybe some anubias or crypts. Obviously low light. What are the pros and cons of both species from personal experience if you have any....?

Thanks for any help, and check out my for sale fish so I can move them soon.......

    Re: Angels or discus

I have angels (3 sizes)... and shell dwellers (dwarf cichlids) along with a prochiolotis and some weird fish (told he was a rainbow...but he doesn't really match any I've seen) and 2 plecos in a 75.  Aside from the large angels acting dominant they all get along very well.  I am loving my angels.  I was told discus require more maintainance... I was told angels required quite a bit too, but mine are pretty hardy.

      Re: Angels or discus

If you never kept discus before I would suggest keeping angels.  If you want to keep discus get the adult ones, the baby ones are really hard to keep.  I learn the hard way as well as my cousin.  Bought like 15 from wattley all died.  I think both are really great.  I had both, and at one time I kept them both in one tank.  The angels were being to agressive especially when they have eggs, so I had to move them.  I think angels are pretty good more outgoing discus more lay back.  Like the guy above I also have some angels with rainbowfish, corys, and pleco.  All of them seem to be getting along, the only casualty is when they jump out of the water when I fill the water all the way to the top.

        Re: Angels or discus

I have 5 angels in my 75 with SA dwarfs, tetras and cories. They all get along with other fish, but 5 is an odd number...and they are all males so one gets picked on a lot. I had 7 in the tank but moved a female and a male to another 75 with other SA dwarfs, tetras and cories and they have had fry several times already.

If you can get Male and Female pairs you will probably be better off. Easier said than done as they are hard to sex when a quarter or smaller in size.

            Re: Angels or discus

Ek is talkin about a discus if i remmember correctly. of course Walter has tehm in houston tap water so that probably helped a bit (Walter correct me if i am wrong) between the two i am going to say Angels are easier to keep and a little more forgiving. Discus are very colorful though. i am going to have to agree with previous statement though if you havent had either i would try angels first, because if you have problems with them then Discus would be a costly error. but if they do well then try discus in the future.

              Re: Angels or discus

I have 6 angels in my planted 75g and A lone discus.  All have been very easy to maintain but agree with the other post start with the Angels first.  If you do decide to go with Discuss I think Walter's are pretty hard I picked up the one from EK and it has done very well.  As far as compatibility go from everything I've seen there are no major problems housing them together.  Good luck both are beautiful fish.

                Re: Angels or discus

I think the difficulty of taking care of angelfish or discus is highly overstated.... neither fish is difficult to take care of, but both require a little more time than cheap fish that really require more care than they get but are cheap to replace so no one talks about it....
angels and discus have almost the same needs with discus being slightly more timid than angels... both require clean water, translated means more water changes than most folks like to do, so they get labled as hard to take care of, but lazy folks should avoid them, as they should avoid having any animal they don't take the time to take care of ....
for the type (not size) tank you have I would recommend only 8 full grown angels or discus.... plant it as you see fit for what most folks would consider a biotype, but it will not be a true biotype.... but it will look nice...
discus and angels also share the same types of diseases so some folks think that is a problem... I do not believe it to be so.... the biggest problem I see with keeping the two in the same tank is that angels tend to be more aggressive eaters and discus may hang back and not eat, you will need to see to it that your discus get enough to eat if kept in with angels... in most cases the angels will spend the aggression out on each other and tend to ignore  the discus altogether and violence between the two does not ususally occur... if you get a pair of either it can get real interesting when they spawn, neither fry group will survive in a community tank...
and with neither fish can you tell male from female in a predictable fashion if you have not seen them spawn... if someone tells you they have a male or female and that they can tell by looking.... shame on em...

                  Re: Angels or discus

I appreciate all the help everyone has given. I think for the time being I will go with some angels. It helps that the girlfriend likes them over discus and spending the money on them will be easier on my head and her vocal cords.

I am not too big on species only tanks so I will include some tetras and cories for sure. Any others I should look into?

Where would be the best place to find some drift wood for tanks?

                    Re: Angels or discus

                    I agree with Obed.
Tiapan you are correct I have them in tap water.

Ranakalea as much as I would like to sell you some discus. 1st start with Angels.
After you get the hang of water changing then get some Discus.
Also I have Discus & Angels in the same tank & never had a problem out of either of them.
As far as driftwood goes Fish Ranch II just got a truck load in.
I got a few pieces from them & I am still having a hard time figuring out which ones I will be keeping.
Also the heavier the wood the faster it will sink.
If you ever have any questions on Discus send me a pm & I will help as much as I can.

Angels are new to me / just pretty!     Did put my 2 in w/ a discus pair, rummynoses, cardinals, cories in planted 100 gallon.    Angels have already laid eggs but as Obed stated they don't last.      No fussing as  these discus are large & not going to miss thier meals.      V

                            Re: Angels or discus

lol once you meet me, you will appreciate this.  I don't know what kind the big angels are but they are pretty, and have long fins and most are orange.  He has one left (or did) that is (was) a brownish marble-y type.  I have two large I purchased last week and after a few close encounters, one paired up with my orange rescue from petco and the other swims with my baby angels.  THey have their territories and do well with other fish.  I have never seen them even think of going after the babies or any other fish.  I recommend his angels.  They are hardy and will need homes soon as their clan in the tank begins to dwindle.  Come to the meeting on Friday. Or stop by his shop before then to guarantee he has any left.

If you want to know what kind of angels anyone has and they are not sure what to call them... go to the Angelfish Society website...
the recently completed phenotype library is posted and you can look up the angel in question... it is a photo library so you can see pictures of most of the known varieties and compare the fish in question to the photos....our standards committee worked a long time to put the library together and hope it helps folks out....
