  • Fishcrobatics

I have a 30 gallon that is 2'-5.5" off the stand and a 20 gallon beneath that is 5.5".  2'.

I came home a found a danio in a tank beneath the tank that he was suppose to be in.  The tank is close to the wall so she must have jumped it.  I went and measured that the water surface was 2 inches beneath the lip of the tank.  The danio must have jumped up two inches in the air, rebounded off the wall and landed or flipped into the tank two feet below.

I have seen fish jump between adjacent tanks, but off the wall 2 feet below is quite amazing.  It is amazing, or I got a teleporting fish.  Either way it is cool.

Right now I have a 1.5" african fry that is in the Betta tank next door....

But my record is a sick fish jumping 2" over the lip of a 10g growout tank and landing 2' left and 3' down and infecting a 45g comunity tank.  I lost all the fish in both tanks in 3 days.

He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

Wow.  Now that is incredulous.  Course your fish I bet you wish it had hit the floor.  What was the sick fish with?

It was pretty cool.  I can't remember the last time I have been amazed by my tanks.  Probably not since my first fry.  Maybe they are telling me to get them a new tank (it is a sign, and it shouldn't be ignored).

I lost so many so fast I could not tell, but I stripped both tanks, tossed the plants, and filled the tanks with a strong bleach solution and let everything soak for a week before I rinced it and neutralized the bleach with Sodium Thiosulfate.  Fortunately that eliminated the problem as I have not had a reoccourance.

After moving on the 1st, my wife woke me up in the midmorning after working a night shift to tell me that a couple of fish jumped out of the tanks in my fish room out back.  I grumpily go outside to my fishroom to find a pleco on the cement ground not moving and a spotted catfish in a bucket that had about an inch of water.

Both had jumped from a second level row of tanks.  I nudged the pleco and he started "crawling along", so I picked him up and put him in another tank.  Catfish was good to go too, I put him back in his tank as well.   They jumped from 5-6 feet high.   8O

I had a convict once many years ago that had gotten ich and he jumped out of his tank and walked (flopped) for about half a carpet length to the door, when I happened to walk into my room and nearly stepped on him.  I put him back in hit QT tank thinking this fish was a gonner...  two weeks later he was breeding with another convict and no ich.  I thought I knew everything when I was 10yrs old...  As I am having fish now I am realizing day by day how little I knew back then and how much more fun I have now :)
