This is a c-channel overflow at the link below. Instead of being a two piece and using a u-tube it is one piece and has a channel connecting the two together. Apparently they are hit and miss for some people from what I have read. You have to use a powerhead or aqualifter to start the siphon and keep the air out of the channel and I am thinking too much air built up in the channel and the aqua lifter couldn't keep up.

I really want to drill the back of the tank but other powers involved are voicing their opinion against it and since I have to live with them I guess we are going to replace the wet /dry with two canisters. We are in the early stages of planning another project so atleast i'll already have the wet/dry and pump for that tank which I will make sure is already drilled before I buy it.

Looks like your mind was made up for you! LoL

Getting a tank drilled is easy and cheap these days. Do some research at the sites I listed. I'm looking into getting a BRS setup for myself soon

Yes the sump level did get low, because the overflow box stopped running because it sucked in too much air. At 4pm the water level in the sump was fine and an hour later it's empty and nothing had been touched since Saturday. The return pump continued to pump out water until the pump chamber was empty and the overflow had lost it's siphon because the aqualifter couldn't keep all of the air out of the c-channel.

The only logical explanation is that the tank was filled over the weekend, the air pump control was turned up putting out more air and the overflow was right next to the top brace which was allowing air to collect and then get sucked into the overflow in large amounts. The overflow has been moved to the far left and has been ok since.

im not really comfortable with drilling glass either. in fact, i used to take a hammer to the bottom of vivariums so that i could replace the bottom with drilled acrylic. that being said, im am now kinda sold on the glass-holes 1500 gph kit for my next project (thanks sunny). they give you everything you need plus plenty of support and instruction videos. you should order it and not tell the powers til it gets there. women always swoon at the sight of sweaty men with power tools so it will work out fine.

So you're changing your non-googling ways now?

Yes Mr/ Baker, just order it and get to plumbing, you just might get to lay some additional pipe afterwards if what Jeff says about the wyminz is true.
