Local fish store carry the ones you just tape on. With that one water tends to get between the glass and the background and cause staining on the glass. Paint would be a better idea and a lot cheaper also

Go to Home Depot, they have window tinting for household applications. They have a black privacy tint available that blocks almost all visible light. I use it on my tanks, and when the lights are on you can't see through the background. When the lights are off the tint is slightly transparent. Its like $17/roll.

Never thought of that. That sounds like an awesome idea. I think I'll try it on my smaller tank.

that house privacy tint is really black, i have never thought of using it and its probably less expensive than car tint. i often use the black dropcloths in the thicker mil from HD, they are tough and hang well. i never notice water getting between the sheet and plastic but then i use soft water so there arent mineral deposits. recycled pond or pool liner is great too.

I second what Texsun said. The stuff is super dark and looks good. We use it at work on sliding door fridges that have glass in the doors and contain light sensitive chemicals and works excellent. Mad at myself now that I have never thought of using as a background.
