  • Lets figure this out

About three years ago I caught a crappie at a local pond here and have had him in a 30 gallon 55 gallon and now he is comfortably housed in a 125 gallon. What I want to figure out is what can I put in there with him that will school that he won't eat. He gets an average of 40-60 Medium (around 1- 1 1/2 inch) comet gold fish every other week. during the day when they school together he gets them in to pretty tight balls but when the lights go out they disappear rather quickly. I was thinking about tiger barbs but they would have to be fully grown 3 inch fish and I do not know where to find them that size. I am open to suggestions. I went ahead and attached a picture of Carl and his home to make everyone feel more apart of it.

Can't see the pic, Crappies get pretty big, my guess would be that eventually he'll eat a full grown tiger barb, what about a red tail shark!

          Lets figure this out

What ever you decide on will have to be full grown or almost there. Even then I would have a hard time trusting him. That's his tank. Tank mates could see a rather large amount of aggression. Also barbs will tear up his fins if he doesn't get them first.

He already has a small bluegill that he shares the tank with but it is very good at staying out of his way and has his own rocky out crop that is full of hiding spots.

You're looking for schooling fish? Does it have to be native? Silver Dollars and Tinfoil Barbs work great for schooling/shoaling dithers. They're both fast and grow to a weird shape that's harder for piscavores to get down.

you should keep it native! I have a group of jade sleeper gobies, and while they aren't schooling fish, they are amazing. I've been thinking about adding some longears to give more action to their tank. maybe we could go in together and try to find some?
                    my fish house:
                    2.5g- ramshorn hatchery
6g eclipse- yellow shrimp, chili rasboras, yellow apple snails
29g- geo grow-out, angels, 12"fire eel, dwarf frog, apple snails
45g- jade sleeper gobies, native killifish, feeder endlers

                    75g-
2 oscars, parrot, silver dollars, albino channel cat, syno euptera, bichir, baby jaguar, convicts, yabby
                    125g- fahaka puffer, rainbow shark
                    and about a dozen bettas....
