Where is my tank leaking from?

So...interesting question. I have a standard 125 gallon aquarium.


I noticed today that my tank is leaking from the top right corner (based on the viewing angle from the front). Very small, a drop or two at a time.


However, this is what puzzles me. The leak is occuring at the top right corner, about half an inch to an inch ABOVE the water line. O.o How is that possible? Where is it coming from?


My initial (wrong) hypothesis:
1) Condenstaion from my top. I let the top go open. Still leaks.
2) My fish are blowing water there. There is no way they could consistently push out a few drops every few minutes.


How is this happening, and more importantly, how do I fix it?!

What are you using for filters and where are the returns.

Resealing a tank can be a big job but it can be done...

Maybe the seal under trim is worn out an just needs resealed

I'd check your filter if you have HOB. I had this happen once on a small tank and it was difficult to figure out.

It looks like the water is running down to the corner form the filter. If you have a hob filter it maybe from it or an in or out line.

Thanks guys. I'll go check my filters for leaks. I gues I just thought I would have seen a leak around the rest of the trim if so, but it's always good to check.

I have 2 Rena XP 4's, a Rena XP3, and an old HOB that I used to help quickly cycle the tank, so maybe one of them is leaking.

i have had the frame wick water over the top via capillary action on a eclipse system, but your water level looks too low for that. i would guess, as the others are guessing, that its a piece of equipment leaking elsewhere and the water is pooling around to the lowest corner of the tank.

Is that silicone(white Cloudy stuff) on the inside? Where a attempt was made to fix the leak. I had a 40gal breeder leak from the top above the water line. That tank leaked from day 1. I just figured water was syphoning up behind a crappy silicone job over the top. Drove me crazy for 3 years. Gave that tank away.Joshia of Ultimate Fish said they had tanks do the same thing at the store.

I would reseal the tank and be done with it....good luck

Are there companies around Houston that can reseal a tank? I don't feel that comfortable doing it myself.

And alas it looks like it's not coming from a filter. My friend suggested putting in a few drops of food coloring to try and follow the leak to make sure, which I think is a good idea: not toxic, right?

Hmm...interesting (and nonsensical) solution to my problem.

I changed my wtaer today and topped up my water level to the top of the tank (to the trim). There is now no leak...WTF?!?! O.o

Any ideas on what happened?

You HOB filter was splashing water on the trim now the tank is full the water doesn't splash?

Tested the theory of the HOB filter by unplugging it, and having the water level go down.

Same symptoms... :/
