  • Eheim Filter

    hi to expert,

I would like to get some idea from every one here. I will have two Eheim 2262, and 2228, and a MaxiJet 1200 soon running in a 100gal planted tank with no CO2. So, the plan is that I will set Eheim 2262 as a chemical filter (substrate, carbon), Ehiem 2228 as biological filter (full of bio-balls), and Maxijet powerhead with sponge as a mechanical filter.

The other way is to split carbon and bio-balls with both Eheim. So, which one you guys think will be better? Other idea will be welcomed.

    Re: Eheim Filter

Since those eheims are pretty large.....

I would do a split...tons of eheim substrat or ceramic rings on the bottom after the coarse sponge then finer sponge up top....I don't use carbon in any of my tanks so that's on you to do so. With this set up you can stagger your filter cleanings to keep from wiping out the beneficial bacteria and both filters will be full of it so they can take the bio-load better.

Just my opinion on how I would do it.  As for the powerhead....I like less clutter so it would not be in the tank.

I am going to have to add a +1 for what EK said.
The maxi I would only add it if your fish needs more saturated O2, but its doubtful you will need it.
Again splitting the bio load between the two filters is much better than trying to let one do all the work.
Carbon only works for about 3-4 months and then you have to change it out too.  By the time 3-4 months has passed all the fine pores where the chemicals atoms can settle into is gone and therefore the Carbon has be changed every 3-4 months anyways.  You will find that after one load of carbon through you will not need again unless you medicate the tank and need to remove the medications after its been used up.
In a 100g tank you would be better off to remove the sick fish and put it in a smaller tank unless you got something like Ich where you are going to need to clean the whole tank at once.  Then to remove the Ich medication you would want to add carbon to clean it out.
If the tank is new and you are unsure about any chemicals coming into the tank the first time (ie not perfectly clean rocks or something like that) then use carbon to remove those ions, but like EK said after 3-4 months I would not run Carbon in the tank and you would back to "splitting" the bio load between the eheims would be MUCH better solution.
In short.  Go with what EK said and you would be better off.

So, carbon is out of the list, But There are so many kind of bio media in the market right now, which one is better? (bio-ball, ceramic ring, Eheim substrate,)

                          Re: Eheim Filter

I have two Eheim 2262's in service, and one Eheim 2260.

They put out a tremendous amount of flow.

The 2262 I have on my 150 gallon and on my 180 gallon.  The 2260 is on my 115 gallon.

On my 5ft 115 gallon the flow from the 2260 spray bar turbulates the first 4 feet, and the flow effect covers the entire 5ft length, bounces off the other end and comes back to the  centerbrace.

The 2262 spray bar is very turbulant in the first 3 feet, then bounces off the other side, and comes all the way back till about the last 6 in of the tank.  The effective spray and movement is 10-12 feet.

I have all three canisters packed identically.  4L of Effimech, 1.5" of Medium Foam from Jhemco, then (2) 1-Gallon Bales of Bio-Bale, then topped off with Blue Bonded Foam pad and 5 bags of Chempure.

I change the 5 Bags of Chempure every 3-4 months, and the Blue Bonded pad about every 6 weeks.  At the 3-4 month mark I change the Chempure, I teardown the filter, by rinsing and re-use of the Effimech Noodles, and Blue Medium Pad in sink water.  Then in discarded Aquarium Water, I rinse the Bio-Bales.  I put new Blue Bonded pad and Chempure back into the filter and start that bad boy up.

If your going to run the 2262 in a planted tank, your plants better like flowing around and having a very high current in the tank.  That is a bad mutha... of a filter for flow.

Personally, I do not know what kind of bio-load with fish your planning in this tank, but the 2260 or the 2228 alone with the powejet is more than likely enough.  Its up to you, but you will see what I was talking about.

                          Take care,

                          Geoff

                            Re: Eheim Filter

When I use the spray bar for Eheim 2262, it roots up the val and java fern. So, I take the spray bar off and aim the openning toward the wall side, and it really help. My second Eheim for this 100 gal is Eheim 2228. I just bought this filter used, but does not have time to replace the substrate yet, so it sits in my closet right now. I am planning to use eheim ceramic rings only to focus on chemical and biological filtration since mechanical as sponge does not help much in planted tank. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I don't like spray bars in a planted tank.

The Eheim Ehfisubstrat Pro is what I would use over the ceramic rings....and mechanical filtration is what gets your water nice and sparkly regardless of what kind of tank it is.
