  • Soaking driftwood

How long does it normally take you guys to soak your driftwood to the point it will sink? I have a piece that is atleast 12 x12x12, looks like a broken tree stump, that I have been submerging for almost 2 weeks now and it still pops right to the top when I remove the weight. I know it will sink because it was in my 125 a few years ago but when I sold the tank it went into the garage and became bone dry.

Could be a month. Could be longer. I have a nice piece still soaking and I lost track of time.

I've had pieces that sit for half a year or more. Unless you get really heavy piece, preferably hard wood, then it'll sink right away, then you just got to deal with the tanins and other things that comes out of that wood.

If you can boil it multiple times somehow, it will sink. You could also put it in your tank and set rocks on it in a fashion where it won't float back up. If you don't want to do either, it could take a while for it to become waterlogged.

Hard woods will sink faster. It took 3 months to get the redoak I have to sink after it did I removed the bark. it took another 3 months to sink again and wasn't out of the water for a week.

Cypress won't waterlogged. Well, from what I read. Not really sure because I've never tried it.
