Big tip on moving fish: Don't feed them for a day or two before the move. They'll produce less waste. I do this every time I've done major moves or if fish are gonna spend any extended time in a bucket or cooler.
You can save large amounts of yor filter media by putting it in a large bucket. Throw a small amount fish food and a a battery operated areator and fill half way with old tank water. This will keep your bacteria nice and alive.
Are you gonna move your tanks too?

Bring test strips. Also bring a 5 gallon bucket of dechlorinated tap water. This maybe useful during your trip incase any of your water starts looking bad.

Re: Thoughts on Cross-Country Moving & Aquariums

Ill be using this thread to document the process. Hopefully this all goes well. If not I'm sure it'll be a good laugh in the end.

BTW, stopped by a LFS here in Denver. They have nothing like Houston has to offer. Mostly run-of-the-mill/bread-n-butter fish.
They have eheim 2217s new in the box listed @ $150.00 OUCH!

This move may cause a drastic downsize in my fish keeping hobby.

Why is the trip taking 2-3 days? Denver is only like 18 hours.

I could do it in a shorter period, but ill be towing a uhaul w/ my stuff. Also I'm going to take advantage of the time & visit a few spots along the way. Mini road trip! No reason to rush up to denver. I've driven 20hrs+ straight from Virginia to Houston before no break, that wasn't a fun drive at all. Too much 5hr energies & coffee you feel strung out & need a couple days just to recover

                          Congrats on the Job.
IMHO, I would have someone form here t o house them so that you can move comfortably.
Setup your tank and let it run then come back for the babies.
I someone here can ship them to you via SW Cargo, etc... That would be ideal.
If not, what I would do when transporting for 18 hours, would be:
see if your vehicle has an outlet 12v and you can add a small filter and buy a cooler, mod it to hold up the hangover filter and air pump with stone.
If not go to Autozone, Lowes, etc... and buy an amp that has 12v outlets.
Do not feed for 2 days.
Add some media to the hangover filter that has been running in a stable tank.
Add epsom salt to the cooler and take with you some prime or w/e you use and melafix.
                          melafix is soo underrated IMHO.
add trophs only to the cooler.
                          plecos can go into bucket.
about 8 hours or so into the drive and you need a break or stop for food, add some freshwater to cooler with prime.
Man honestly this is pretty much a gamble and some Mcguyver type mods.
My car has a 12v outlet in it so I use an airpump when I typ. get babies.

But the best bet is to have them shipped to you via SW Cargo, etc...

Can someone here help with the shipping?
I have shipped few times before but I do not have an account.
                          I am looking into it.

Good luck to your future endeavors and hope all goes very well for you and the babies.

                              Good luck man.
Tell us when you get there how they did and how you moved them.
I am sure someone in the future would need some advice on a long haul move.
                              Again, good luck man.

Best of luck! You'll be missed. If you're ever in Houston, you'll have a place to stay.
