  • FX5 vs Pro Clear 125 wet dry

I was looking for a new pump for my wet dry that im currently using on my 40g breeder. I was thinking of buying a Mag 7, but then I remembered that im about to have a spare Fx5 filter once i take it off my 200g. Now im torn which i want to use, and also wondering if an Fx5 would be too much water flow in such a small tank(filled with mostly Malawi's)? by using the canister filter I will be able to remove the overflow box and dont have to worry about topping off the wet dry between water changes, but I will also have to add an air stone.

I'm always pro wet dry as the mandatory filter, then everything else is secondary.

i think on a 40g tank the fish would be spinning around like they are being flush down the toilet.

I had an fx5 and a wet dry on a 55g, didn't need any additional power heads. I understand though a 40g is a bit smaller. What gph on the wet/dry? I say both BC I believe an fx5 is mechanical filtration and a wet/dry is Bio filtration. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. But having both types of filtration is great. As long as its not too much flow, but that's another topic of great debate. Lol

If i get the Mag 7 the W/D will flow around 450gph with the length of tubing i will use.

Opposite of what you said. Mechanical means it collects a lot of poop and larger particles, hence having an overflow that allows larger particles. Canisters work slower, producing healthier biological levels, but because they are so good at it, they can become higher in nitrates.

fx5 man will be more than enough for a 40B, what are you putting in there that is so dirty and needs that much filtration?

its not that I "need" that much filtration, if anything I was thinking it was too much flow. I actually like my wet dry, but was thinking it might be more cost effect if I just used the Fx5 instead of buying a new pump for the wet dry.

Of the two....I would go with the FX5 . It's only 40 gallons....why make it complicated and more expensive by purchasing an additional pump . Since you already have the FX5......keep it simple and use it .
